With the VFR1200F yet to be ridden by the paying public, I've been a little surprised to read so much negative posting about it here on VFRD. The intensity and rancor of the posts seems to be increasing to the point where it's a bit reminiscent of the release of the VTEC. Indeed, the parallels are getting harder to ignore...
Many of you old-timers will recall that a similar chorus of people that had never ridden that bike became so loud that many current and prospective VTEC owners grew tired of it, and rode off into the sunset. A lot of cumulative knowledge was lost, along with many other facets of the online VFR community that we all enjoyed. To add insult to injury, the chorus was wrong. The bike turned out to be great, and many owners have enjoyed thousands of happy miles aboard them.
Since that time, some fences have been mended, and I once considered VFRD to be a positive force in that direction. However, it is becoming apparent that we appear to be on the cusp or repeating the sins of the past, and I am beginning to wonder...
Will the VFR community split again?
It's an interesting question, and as we all have some stake in the outcome, I think it's worthy of some discussion...
This happens every time there is change. Some embrace it and some reject it.
If the VFR community divides it will not be the end of the world. It's just a forum after all
So, go for a ride and leave your troubles behind.
The VFR community will still be there when you get back.
It will all depend on which Gen leaves the parking lot at the Franklin Motel first.....http://www.vfrdiscussion.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/default/goofy.gif
Personally - I am simply just tired of reading posts from what I'm calling TROLLS - that are only trying to be negative and are going for a reason to cause folks to get riled up.
Armchair quarterbacks / keyboard commandos - or whatever you want to call these people that are posting volumes on what is still a bike "on paper" (as not many have ridden it for any length of time) are annoying.
Lets have a look at the thing in person, go for a long ride, check it out a little more than perusing some web site video clips before its condemned as a POS.
I can't afford this bike, not for a few years anyways - so I have little vested interest in it right now. Having said that - I'm still aggravated by all the prophets that seem to know what the thing is like....
After having read many of the negative posts about the new VFR I believe some board members will prefer to split. I agree that it is juuust a bit premature to bury the 1200 considering no member of this board has actually riden one. Personally I like the bike, it looks to me to have some of the great traits that the previous vfr's have and more.
Having just purchased a new left-over '07 in June I can say without a doubt I won't be buying a 1200 anytime soon. So much negativity continues to be written about the v-tec that I've stopped frequenting certain sport touring oriented sites on the web. The 6th gens are great bikes, truly a fun, affordable, all rounder that has sport bike looks with real world usability.
I've posted on this site how I wish Honda would import some of their inline fours ala cb1300 & cb1000r not because I don't like the new 1200, I just would love to see a variety of comfortable road burners come our way. I'd actually love to park a comfortable sporty inline four next to my vfr.
Moving forward I say let's just vote with our dollars instead of making this site, or any other, a contentious piss festival on how bad the new vfr is.

That's a healthy attitude of course...but I can't help wondering how it's in the best interest of a forum to engage in behaviour that would tend to decrease the number of potential participants/donors/et al...
Interesting question. I'm no old-timer, but I think you are right that there is probably an exaggerated negative bias towards the new bike. I am as guilty of it as anyone.
This happens a lot when a beloved model changes missions, which I think the VFR has in this case. And, as you alluded to, it's perhaps not the first time. In fact, I look at the gorgeous 1st-gen bikes that I fell in love with, and wonder what my VTEC really has in common with them.
However, in defense of the nay-sayers, I want to propose that there is usually a "tipping point" where the ability to accept a certain amount of change really starts to diminish.
For example: weight. How much is too much? I came from a bike 100 pounds lighter than my RWB and am still coming to grips with the uptick. Now the 7th-gen is another 100 pounds on top of that. Will the 8th-gen be an 800 pound bike? When do we blindly accept that this is the price of progress?
Speaking of price... How much of that is too much? It's hard to speak to this given our economic situation - but at the moment it's easy for me to say that my bike was never worth $12K. Even easier to say that NO bike is worth $16K. Doesn't matter if it turns me into a reiteration of Freddie Spencer AND makes espresso. Finding that much cabbage is just tough right now. And that's depressing.
And finally, maybe most depressing is starting to realize that our (the US) market is not the most significant anymore. I've had my heart crushed repeatedly by naked bikes that sold like hotcakes in Europe but that were never even introduced here. And it may be that the VFR1200 isn't what we asked for because Honda didn't ask us. Maybe it's not about us at all. Perhaps this bike was really designed for a market where it will sell. That is probably a foreign feeling for a lot of us (no pun intended), but it is what it is...

Anyway, yeah... interesting question. ;)
Great point about the U.S. market not being the most significant anymore. I definately agree with you 1000000% on this, the U.S. is not the driving force for motorcycle development and a lot of folks refuse to believe it.
The old-school VFR community can stick together... I'll wave as I blow past the group 2-up fully loaded with luggage up a hill in the mountains on my 170hp VFR1200.
People get too tied up with expectations. A lot of them forget that Honda is not the only manufacturer out there. This is a great time to be a biker - there are a TON of terrific bikes available, and, newsflash, they are not all Hondas!
Although this forum is a wonderful place to share ideas, unfortunately it also gives people an avenue to spend FAR too much time obsessing on things! And in the time since the last redesign many developed an idea of what THEY wanted the next VFR to be, but I don't think anyone saw this 1200 coming! LOL
Keep an open mind! If you prefer your 800 or 750 or whatever, then keep it! Mod it the way YOU want it to be and save yourself a lot of money by not buying the new model.

If I understand you correctly, you are pursuing a noble cause titled 'Why can't we all just get along?'
Well, I like seeing people disagree on stuff. It makes for good reading and that's why I visit this forum. ;p Among other things ;)
Split? I dont remember it being split the first time? There were people who came here I rember that! Lots of people came here _ dont remember a split. Perhaps your talking about the big list?
Will this one be polorizing? I dont know, I see no harm in talking honestly about a bike, as long as it is not somthing that will turn into flames, flame wars or people getting personal over it, its just a bike after all. I have been certainly interested in the new bike, a bit dissapointed with certain aspects and intrigued by the new features. It seems I have not made up my mind, not at all. If anybody is locked it I suppose it should be me, I did dedicate an awful lot of time and energy to the cause. Lets not get all upset, keep and open mind and listen to what is being said, opionions matter here and we should hear all of it before taking action! Yes some of the negative things are drowning out the postives, its different thats for sure. Perhaps more people should join in and say whats on thier mind about this new bike, then we can have a real vfrdiscussion.
I have been reading and find everything quite funny really. I study change and it has funny way of causing folks to go all crazy. I also see it as all of us are passionate about the VFR name and what it represents. I have only owned early gens (1st, 2nd, and 3rd) and have been debating for some time to look at the 5th or 6th as next jump (sorry to any 4th Gen'ers). The new 1200 is too big for me at this point, although i was all excited with my cycle world mag showed up with the 1200 on the cover! No matter what the VFR name will live on and we will all talk about them, we are all together in this as i see it!

As far as the VFR goes, the US market has Never been a driving force in it's design or development! The US buyer has never recognized the true value in this " Does everything well" bike like most of the rest of the world did and making it a Top seller vs the US buyer lining up to buy the latest and greatest Super Sport In-line 4.
Split Again?
I don't think VFRD ever suffered a split, but it did loose many good members who grew tired of the totally negative run we suffered from usually newer narrow minded members who freely trashed any bike that didn't meet their narrow vision of one.
Didn't matter if it was another VFR they were trashing/bashing and the Vtec was generally the target in this most recent decade. Many many people including myself got very tired of logging onto their favorite VFR site to only find VFR bashing!
No doubt these same small minded negative individuals will completely ignore the fact that we(VFRD) are/is NOT on a 1st Gen, a RC30/RC45, a 2nd or 3rd gen, a carberated, gear driven, or 5th or 6th gen site, it Is a Community of motorcycle enthusiasts who love and own VFR's! In fact you don't even have to own a VFR to be a welcome member. :)
VFRD has always been open to different opinions and you don't have to like every model or change to the VFR, BUT if you can't express yourself in somewhat of a positive way w/o trashing or bashing a VFR model (especially after never even riding or owning the bashed model) I just assume you go elsewhere to spread your negativism!
Just don't forget, if your bashing or trashing any VFR model your bashing & trashing our VFRD membership and I will always look down on that and I'm extra cranky in the wheelchair! ;)
But that's just me!

Really, they rode off? I dont recall that, but then I'm old and forget...stuff...
If they ride off and leave the forum just because a minority dont like the new VFR then thats their choice, must be pretty thin skinned.
From an old diddy my older brother told me when I was about 12/15?... "Money isn't the number one thing in life; But it's way ahead of 2nd ".
This forum has a following like many others that draw peps to it for information, about like mc's..... But unlike most forums it has threads for each change (GEN's). When the VFR 1200 comes out and someone buys it, the only thing I can expect is there well be a new tread for Gen 7's.
Now back to my old diddy..... That's not the number one reason peps come to this (VFRD) forum for.... It's the mix of "friends & info".
That's how I see it.... Am I right....U-RAH........ Monk
I see many hundreds of people's threads on their emotions/feelings of this or that, including motorcycles. I definitely enjoy reading about the new stuff and seeing the pictures, et al, but I could care less if you don't like it and want to share your feelings. Keep it to yourself, find something to admire about it, and share that. Yay.
Reminds me of football "news" in the last couple of years, talking about the NFL,on Monday Morning Quarterback for example. A typical news snippet from yesterday: Steelers player reaction to Hines Ward saying Ben Rothsselskldfjlasjfdberger isn't tough: blahblah....you get it. I don't care. That's not what football is about. I don't care what NFL players Twitter about. But I love watching the NFL games. All that talk doesn't matter.
I can understand people voicing their opinion but it's not that bad. All the talk and hate won't mean anything until you ride it. People aren't Twitter-ing about it yet at least.
and I'm extra cranky in the wheelchair!
But that's just me!

Never drove anything but HONDA.....
Hell, even my lawnmower, grass trimmer, snowblower are HONDAs..... :schla15: Singles, twins, I4s, I6s, flat 4s, V4s..... :musik20:

Although I am planning on keeping my 6th gen (50K miles and PAID FOR), I am very excited to see what the 7th gen owners have to share about their new bikes. Been a member of VFRD since 1999 and would not go elsewhere even if I did purchase another bike (7th gen or another make). I for one hope that nobody leaves and am optimistic that we will NOT have a split.

This is only the internet; it is just a bunch of electrons flying around in cyber space. When folks leave angry, works for me. When folks leave because they have had their fill for whatever reason, including getting their feelings hurt, other folks fill the void; ya, even on subjects like oil. :goofy:

Actually no, I'm not, as I don't really don't have a stake in the outcome. However if a membership chooses to let the dissonant chorus push away others in a situation similar to what BR describes in paragraph #2 of Post #15, then I find that an interesting turn to take, and one worthy of discussion...
So if I'm "pursuing" anything, it's simply that, discussion...

Split Again?
I don't think VFRD ever suffered a split,
No, I think he is referring to the split on the Big List. For the new folks, that was a rather large and useful email based list until the VTEC was announced. It's no coincidence I joined VFRd in early '03 after lurking for a few months at the end of 02.
Kind of silly that a new generation would divide a community. Hell, I don't even currently own a VFR but I still check in here quite often. I was a member of the "big list" a long time ago. Does it still exist? Is it still run off a listserver? How 80s. :goofy:
I can't imagine the board "splitting" over a new VFR. It's a riduclous concept that VFR lovers would feel so much disdain for the VFR they would leave, given that there's still so much knowledge available for every other gen.
I joined this board years ago, after purchasing my 6th gen. People bashed it but, c'mon, really. . . If my opinion of the bike I'm riding can be swayed by what other people are telling me about it. . . that has more to do with the owner of said bike than the bike itself. You either like your bike or you don't and that is entirely up to you. I've owned bikes I didn't like and promptly sold them. . . based on my opinion of the bike.
I'll wait to see what the new bike looks like and I'm prepping the wife for the possible upcoming purchase. I say possible because, like everyone else, I HAVEN'T EVEN SEEN IT YET. I'm not going to write it off without looking at it and trying to squander a test ride first. And I can't wait for it to show up at my dealership. :fing02:

When do we blindly accept that this is the price of progress?
Speaking of price... How much of that is too much?
Good point, C. For another example let's look at the Honda Accord. Compare price, weight, and features of the 1989 and 2009 models. The new model -- clearly -- costs far more, weighs far more, and is far better equipped. It's the price of progress -- plus increased safety regulations and the equipment necessary to satisfy them. But the Accord still sells like hotcakes because it does what it's supposed to do. And it does so reliably, comfortably, and efficiently.
How much is too much? Frankly, when I see Accord sticker prices in the $32K range I think to myself, "that's too much." But maybe that's because I remember (roughly) what a 1989 Accord cost.
As far as I can determine from the press reports, the new VFR1200 is not my cup of tea, but then I drink coffee. "Ride what you like, like what you ride" is the best way I can think of to look at it. :idea3:
As long as you are up on two wheels it is all good; scooter, cruiser, pure sports, dual sport, dirt or sport-tourer. It seems to me it is the joy of being on a bike (any bike) that we all have in common. :fing02:
To the ijiots who want to change lanes blindly and run us off the road, like the two jokers yesterday and today for me, it doesn't matter what gen you're on, you're just road kill.
I will say that my initial impression was very negative. That being said, the new VFR still isn't what I wanted. There in lies the problem, "what I wanted". I was expecting/hoping for a new middle weight sport touring bike that leaned more heavily toward the sport side and I was looking for the sharp angles that come with what is now, older generation sport bikes. What I now see in the VFR is a completely different bike than the 6th gen.. Honda has gone off on a totally different tangent aiming for the Concours/FJR/K1300GT crowd. It took me a while to get over loosing what I was expecting to see. Now that I have come to realize that Honda has a new idea, I'm good with it. Actually, I kind of like the VFR. Shaft drive should be more reliable, lower maintenance. 1200 cc's should handle long slab runs with greater ease and the fairing design should move a much larger amount of air through the engine area. Heck, even those that hated VTEC transitions should see a light at the end of the tunnel. I think once that people understand what they are looking at, they will like it! If you're expecting a new bird dog and you see a calico cat, you're going to hate the cat. OK, I hate cats anyway but you get the idea. Mailman out.
P.S. I got in a nice 100 miler today in Colorado on DECEMBER FIRST!

I think they are a buying demographic. The very last of the WWII baby boomers or their kids that started riding mini-trails in the 60's, CB's in the 70's, VF's in the 80's and VFR's in the 90's and till today. This group have disposable income (maybe not quite so much now with the recession) which Harley and BMW have absorbed with their more "mature machines" as these riders aged over the last few years. Now Honda wants them back. :warranty:
I think theres a few 6th gen owners that remember alittle friendly vtec bashing. its only natural new 7th gen owner should get there share to.
Seems like some people still hold a grudge about VTEC, and I expect some will over the new VFR, too. I'm not one of them tho. If you love your 4th, 5th or 6th gen, great. That doesn't mean the new VFR (or any other gen for that matter) isn't also a terrific bike for those who love them. If you don't like the new VFR, then don't buy one. But don't trash the bike here either.
As Jackie Moon said, "Everybody love everybody." ;p
Personally, I'm really looking forward to seeing the 7th gen VFR in person next year, and hope to get a test ride on it at the local dealer sometime.
Sure there are a couple things about it that make me scratch my head, but overall it looks pretty good on the spec sheet and the pix ain't bad either. I'm reserving judgement 'til I can see and ride one.
I'm fairly new and I can imagine how bad the 6th gen bashing was back when it came out... it still can get annoying...
The only thing I dislike about the 7th is the added pounds.. everything else seems pretty nicely upgraded technology wise... Heck my bike has fallen over twice. Thought I was going to blow a nut sack off picking the dam thing up.. yes, I read the how to pick your bike up with you back thing the lady did with the massive BMW.. I'm a cyclist upper body strengh is not errr large :goofy:
If it makes you guys feel better its not just the VFR crowd... its the same with the M3 crowd, been some pretty hard core finger pointing and name calling... M3's get heavier and move more out of what an M3 should be, irritating the die hards more andmore every chassis change. Been some pretty heated arguing over the model years.. E30m3 guys still claim... "the original" I have V1.0 an V2.0 Much like the VFR's, each model I think has its good and bad features...
I'm really intrested to actually ride one to see how it feels... if I bought one I would still keep the trusty 03 VFR
I don't think there will be any split, either in real life or in cyberspace. This forum has a sub-section for each iteration of the model and will, I guess, continue to do so.
Whether or not time will see the 1200 being accepted as a "REAL" VFR, like it's earlier generations, is a different matter. The bike so plainly appeals to a slightly different demographic than previous VFR's have and my guess is that it will carve out its own niche and the true believers will go on loving and riding their 1st-6th Gens.
Again I must say that the "early adopters" are being a little disingenuous here again. It seems that it is OK to PRAISE the bike (even though none of us have ridden it) but it is somehow wrong to damn it, (even though none of us have ridden it.) I find a curious double standard here that is both puzzling and highly ridiculous at the same time.
I may buy one, one day, but I'll need a much better reason than Honda-bred hype to forsake my faithful 4th Gen that does everything that I want of it magnificently.
Nobody's mentioned the absolute roasting that accompanied the 5th-gen's newfangled "Linked Braking System". That was pretty vicious, as I recall, but few of the new 5th-gen owners threw their toys out of the pram and stalked off into the sunset (er, VFRD). I'm not going to say anything about VTEC ownwers... But let's give the new 7th-gen owners the benefit of the doubt!
I don't think it is any of us splitting, Honda is taking care of that for us. They can hype and market a 600lb 130RWHP bike all they want, I'm just not buying it. It's been awhile since I owned my '98VFR800. It was a good bike. I do feel that Honda has fallen short on this new one. For a decade (and I remember discussing this on the VFR list back in the day) we've asked for a sub 500lb 1000cc V4 from Honda that produces power comparable to the latest literbikes and has no linked brakes. IMO, Honda gives you a little of what you want, not what you want. If they made what we wanted, we'd buy it, and wouldn't buy their next small upgrade machine 4 years later. This is why they never fully give you what you want.
I realized long ago that you can take a new literbike, change the clip-ons, buy a comfy seat, and turn it into a sport tourer. I don't travel with pillion and if that was a major factor in the purchasing decision, I'd buy a ST or GW anyway, not a VFR. I've ridden the latest R1 a few times and that motor acts like a V4. I've sat on the Aprilia, and it's too small, too compact to do what I want. The R1 is pretty comfy for a literbike, all it needs is a few changes, some soft bags (I travel light) and it'll do the job quite nicely. I'm a fan of the feel of the V4 motor, consider myself a V4 head but Honda has lost me as a customer. I wish them well and don't hate the new VFR or Honda. It's just not the bike I'm looking for and not what I had hoped for. The pricetag was the last straw for me. They are in RSV4/1198 turf with that price. If it was cheaper, it might get considered but at that price they can have it.
The only thing that going to spit around here is your gut... (just get Bailey started)
I think we are all getting along just fine... thanks to HS this site
is a wealth of V4 information... VFRD riders I've had the pleasure to
know personally know how to divide your grief and multiply your
pleasure... not to mention they also know how to kick it and wick
it...
Or to put it another way, Honda is coming out with a new VFR, the economy sucks, I can't afford one, so I'm gonna bitch and moan about the new one to soothe my fragile ego (and that includes yours truly). As Kenny Mayne (ESPN) would say: Time to man up brothers. Deal with the fact you can't by a new scooter when they hit the show room floors.
The interest and ownership of a Honda VFR (regardless of the generation) brings us here.
The camaraderie and friendships we develop keep us here.

splitter! [video: http://www.youtube.com/v/gb_qHP7VaZE]
That clip is classic. I honestly couldn't grasp the concept of VFR community splitting over a new model. Having ridden with and ride planned with VFR riders here I realize what a bunch of individualist natural leader each of them are. That's where we started using the expression of trying to heard cats when planning routes, meet up times and places to eat. Bunch of GDI's here as far as I'm concearned and that's the way I roll too. :wheel:
