Tank Prop Location

This is probably a dumb question, but I don't have a manual. Is there a prop for the fuel tank somewhere? I have an 02 and just got it this past fall. It's possible mine is just missing. If so, are there any good ideas for a replacement (all thread, coat hanger)?

It's that rod under the seat that you have no idea why it's there. Remove the two bolts at the front of the tank immediately behind the steering stem. One end of the rod goes into one of the bolt holes in the frame, the other end goes into the collars inside the grommets in the tank. The rear of the tank is hinged. You can only lift the front of the tank about 10-12" before hoses and wires start pulling tight.

Warning, those collars inside the rubber grommets in the tank will fall out very easy and fall down into the innards of the bike to be all but impossible to get out or find again. If you do unbolt the front of your tank, put a dab of 3M Trim Cement on the collars so they don't fall out of the grommets the next time you have the tank up.

If your prop is missing all together, go to Home Depot and get a section of one eighth inch steel rod and cut it to length and bend as necessary.

Huh :comp13: mine never came with a rod for the tank!

I typically use my rubber mallet, striking end on the airbox, handle on the tank...when I did my valve adjustment I used a piece of rope, got it the right length and voila :fing02:

The rod is a good idea for the garage, but the rope is a lot lighter and easier to carry on the road perhaps :wheel:

What I actually do is I have an eye bolt screwed into the ceiling joist (Kitchen floor joist) above the area where I work on my VFR. I just run a long tie wrap through both holes in the tank then use a tie down strap from the tie wrap to the ceiling eye screw.

Thanks for the quick responses. Mine is missing. I have a power commander in place of the rod I believe. Not a bad trade off I guess. Off to home depot for me unless I can find some rope.

I've always just used a screwdriver to prop mine.

On the fifth gen the shock tool and handle doubles as a tank prop, put one of the tank screws back into the hole to hold the handle in place and there is a notch in the shock tool that fits into a hole in the front of the tank.

I think the 6th gen manual says to use the spanner wrench, used to adjust the chain tension, in combination with the Honda supplied handle. I have the perfect sized 1" dowel rod, labeled in Sharpie "DO NOT USE" that serves perfectly to prop the tank. The kids know not to leave the garage with it. Don't ask for dimensions. . . I grabbed it one day and it fit perfectly. :laugh:

Ok, after downloading the manual I checked my tool bag and I actually do have the spanner wrench. It works just fine. Turns out I have a K&N filter installed. Just need to clean it.
