Just the other day I noticed that I was getting ridiculously long range from a tank of fuel on my 2002 VFR. I pulled over at the petrol station and after filling up discovered I have just done 300 kilometres on 17 litres of fuel. That's about 5.6 litres per hundred kilometres.
I've never, ever had that kind of economy when commuting. I mean, I've had the bike for eight years so you'd think I'd have come close before!
Maybe after 140,000 kilometres I've managed to finally break in the engine? :laugh:

I envy you all best to date.. 21995 on engine.. 300 kms to 18 ltrs.... But... I don't alway's drive like a little old lady... I always run 94 octane(best I can get around here) :wheel:

It took 21.6 litres to fill up that time, so my best calculation is 5.08 litres/100km, so I probably had less than 10km to empty! I must qualify the riding style, which was mostly 110-120 kph on gently sinuous secondary roads. Needless to say there was no VTEC engagement :blush: . The bike was loaded down with side bags and top case though. The last 50kms (around 25 minutes or so) I was VERY steady and even on the throttle, and the flashing dash light was REALLY annoying and distracting.

My '98 only requires 87 octane go juice. I read somewhere that using 94 octane adds nothing to performance and can actually reduce gas mileage. Anyone know anything about this?

If your bike dosent knock (pre-ignite, detonate) with 87 octane, the only difference with 98 octane is money spent.

If I am doing the math correctly, 300 km = 186 miles, 17 liters = 4.5 gallons and so 186/4.5 = 41 miles per gallon. I think most 6th gens get 45 - 48 miles per gallon or about 5.0 liters per 100 kilometers. If my mileage dropped below 45 miles per gallon I would start looking at the bike to find out what is not working correctly.
I could very well be using a incorrect conversion factor. 1 gallon = 3.79 liters and 100 kilometers = 62 miles.
I used to hear people say "I got xx miles on a tank of gas" and they had no idea how much actual fuel was used.

Yeah, I usually get about 41-45 miles per gallon but that's because I'm a very spirited rider. Usual cruising speeds is about 85. Typically about 90-95. I've had days where I had to go slower (75ish). Those are days I get about 45mpg. So I'd imagine going the speed limit would get me that 40-*52* range I've heard some people boast about. 23K on the engine. Leo Vince exhaust with Power commander might have something to do the the lower average. Riding at just under VTEC kicking in.

US gallons Vs Imperial gallons.
1 US gallon = 3.78541178 liters
1 Imperial gallon = 4.54609188 liters
So if we in Canada say that we got (xx) MPG, it's automatically sounding 20% better than the same statement south of the border.
Also, 100km = 62.5 Mi.
So, you are agreeing that I did the math correctly? Not exactly sure what are saying here.
Using the orig posts units, he is saying that he gets 41 miles per US gallon. I am saying that that number sounds low.
Not picking a fight, I am just asking for an explanation of where I may have gone wrong.

I�m not sure I can agree with that statement. You can see my average mpg below and of the 6th gens on fuelly.com that is the highest and I am a very conservative rider normally. That average is strongly weighted with winter gas (and my last couple of tanks has really sucked) since I�ve just bought the motorcycle in September. I suspect that average will start to go up slowly starting in April but I still don�t think the average for most 6th gen owners is as high as you suggest unfortunately.
I read something recently that suggested you get better fuel economy if you don't accelerate gently up to speed, but get to crusing speed quickly. I can't verify this (or even provide a source, but it was in an article about fuel economy), but it makes sense from the point of view that your engine runs at a better stoichiometric ratio with the butterflies wide open.

I am sure there are many factors that can influence fuel economy, but I routinely get 47-48 miles per gallon. I calculate fuel economy at every refuel stop. Last summer I rode to Alaska (9,000 miles/ 22 days) and at some points was averaging 49-52 miles per gallon (calculating on a single tank), but it was mostly highway use. The average for my trip was a little over 46 mpg.
As I am fairly anal about my motorcycle, I have kept track of this since the day I bought it.

LOL, if my mileage was that good I'd be asking myself why I wasn't twisting the throttle more! 48 miles per gallon? That's old granny territory.
You're assuming too much about my riding style. It is not possible to commute the way I do and get 48 miles per gallon on the VFR. :)
Anything higher than 87 octane adds nothing unless you are getting engine knock. Doesn't hurt, but doesn't help. Just costs more. I'm not entirely sure about international fuel ratings, but Ontario should be the same as U.S. octane ratings.
Also, fuel mileage is extremely subjective, every bike is different and every rider is different. Identical bikes might vary by 5 mpg, and one person's "spirited ride" might be more gentle than another's "granny riding"...
311kms and used 14.53l. That works out at 21kms per litre or 59.45 miles per (Imperial) gallon. That's not running the tank to empty, you understand, that's a "fill-up" figure, but not bad nonetheless. Extrapolate that to a full tank and it would mean 441kms on a tank to bone empty, assuming the last few drops got through to the carbies. When that check was made the bike had around 90000kms on the clock, so I guess it's pretty well run-in now, eh?
