VFR1200 trip around Australia

Yeah I put this in another of the threads here...

I like the quote from twitter "Last night in the rain this tank had nearly 100km of easy going, today same tank had 140km of hard going... The result, 240km 16.7 litres"

That means only 265km to dead set empty, and that's only getting up it half the time... :blink:

Laps of the Putty eh? Remember the halfway house burned down last year, so there's no fuel at all now between Broke & about Colo somewhere. Hope he's got a support vehicle :comp13:

Yes, I noticed that too. I'm also concerned that yesterday he did 1100kms on a fully-loaded bike with a pillion passenger. I hope he's not planning that sort of mileage every day.

I wasn't thinking about the fuel stops so much as the discomfort and the cumulative effect that riding long distances each day has on your tiredeness level for the day after. Add in the pillion passenger and the constant rain throughout Monday and I'm gld I'm not him.

Hehe. But he's riding around Australia remember. There are plenty of opportunities here for getting stuck in the middle of nowhere with a sub 300km fuel range.

The point everyone is trying to make is that it's an unneccessary distraction. You need to plan your ride around fuel stops rather than just getting on and riding somewhere.

Interestingly enough, the journo doing the around Oz ride says there is a touring version will come some time later, so presumably with bigger tank, better hard luggage etc. This one is going to be pitched as more of a sportsbike that you can put bags on and go touring if you want to. So basically, what they've marketed the 800 as for the last 10 years...

He also says the journos were commenting that it was a lot more sporting than they had thought it would be after their run up the Putty. If you're interested this is pretty much the ride they would have done http://tinyurl.com/yaxfglu. It's a nice combination of tight corners, sweepers, and fast straights that's very popular with the Sydney weekend hero crowd. So popular in fact that riding up there on a weekend is no longer much fun, since there are more than your fair share of idiots and a heavy police presence... :angry: But on week days it's largely deserted :fing02:

Also note the distance; 282km round trip. Any other VFR, not a problem. This bike, um, is there fuel somewhere 'cause I'm gonna run out. It's not fatal because you can get fuel where you turn around for the return lap, but it's annoying because you're forced to.

Kirbs, off-topic but is the Halfway roadhouse rebuilt yet? I hope they hotmix the carpark :angry:

Halfway house is actually worse now than what it was immediately after the fire. The site has been looted and vandalised considerably. No plans that I know of to rebuild it any time soon.

There's some decent photos of the new bike in the mcnews write-up.

I want to like its looks ... I really do ... but it's just not squeezing my lemons!

Maybe it'll grow on me ... :unsure:
