VF500 cosmetic surgery

Hey everybody,

Currently stuck in a thumb spica cast, so even though it's warm out I can't go riding! I should be getting my cast off in the next 4-6 weeks hopefully, but I've decided to use this time to fix anything I can on my bike. She runs well, although I think the carbs need a sync because I cleaned them out last fall, but it was my first time doing that so it's possible that I either didnt get it all out, or they just need to be synced, or possibly the gas thats in there is old and shitty. Other than that in terms of the engine, I've pretty much dropped the idea of getting more power out of it since parts are so hard to come by.

First fix

The fuse cover on my 500 had the mounting points cracked off so I decided that I would fix it using a pen tube and some putty.

Today I tried to get some of the gas stain off the frame, but didnt have much luck. I used some polishing compound, but it seems like that stuff in deep in the paint, and I won't be able to lift it out. Does anybody know of anything that can lift a gas stain from paint? It kind of bothers me but I doubt I'll be tearing her down just for a frame repaint...

Carb cleaner on a blue shop towel. Don't use a red cloth rag, the red will bleed into the paint. And don't rub it too long. :fing02:

Oh, smother your switch controls in vaseline/petroleum jelly and be prepared to be amazed! Rub it on thick, let it sit overnight, then wipe it off. Black as new! :warranty:

I plan on getting into the cockpit in a few weeks. In one of the pictures above I show the plexiglass over the gauges is cracked. My father has a band saw at home that I have used before, so I'm going to cut a new one out, and re-black the dash then. I'm also considering getting a fan switch because my bike does duel duty with long rides on the weekend and quick runs to class.

theres a compound you can use on surface rust when detailing cars, it takes the rust colour out of the bubbled paint, not fixing but only masking, however, that may take care of your gas stain. could also try mothers back to black on the cockpit . never heard of/tried vaseline, im curious though now
