The duty on new bikes is very high this does discourage people to get these bikes in directly. Honda, ducati, yamaha, harley are in India now - but the price points are still high. They are monopolzing the market - so people do not buy directly.
Initially they used to allow import of second had bikes are 100% and new at lower %, but now they have stopped secondhand imports and raised the new bikes imports.

Anik has a box from Bike Bandit the size of a small shipping container sitting at my house right now. He must have some way of getting stuff home to India. The piece-by-piece method seems viable.

this is not new - people have been doing that from 2005 but in 2008 - they have raided and confiscated all these bikes. put the people (importer, owners, the mechanics, customs, Transportation officers) behind bars, penalties etc.
in 2009, i have hardy seen any imported bikes on road because of this even people with genuin papers stayed put to avoid any "problems" with the authorities.
so people have thought of this but got :beatdeadhorse:
