A friend of mine bought a 1980 BMW R100 last year with the intention of stripping it down and fixing it up. Well, commitment from work and kids have caused him to abandon the project so he gave it to me. I don't really have the space or "Ultimate set of tools" so I called a friend of mine who helps me work on my 4Runner and said "Hey man, someone just gave US a motorcycle to fix up". His wife, (much like mine) said "Oh... great..." so we are picking it up today.
The bike did run last year when he parked it and started pulling the fairings off of it.
My friend with the sweet garage doesn't ride nor does he plan to. But he does weld, has a bead blaster and what seems like 8700 torque wrenches. This should be interesting.
My plan is to strip off any unnecessary crap and make it a decent standard or better yet "cafe it" a bit.
If anyone has any advice on this project, please step forward. We are open to help and/or ideas.

Shaweet! My advice to you is to seize the momentum and plunge into it. I have a '70 R75/5 that is a total mess but is begging for a cafe treatment. My daughter has taken to calling it "her bike" and is now demanding a lime-green sidecar as well... Ah well, until that money tree I planted bears fruit...

You couldn't have gotten a simpler bike to work on, I've had two oil-heads. Never converted them, but they were the easiest bikes I've worked on.... Sounds like fun....
