I've just been trawling the VFR1200 parts database. Some interesting stuff:
- Still uses a MAP sensor rather than a MAF sensor with barometric sensor
- Still uses a permanent magnet rotor & stator
- There is no external camchain tensioner anymore. It is a large spring attached to the chain slider inside the engine
- No dedicated fuel pressure regulator. Now functions like CBR1000RR, with fuel pressure regulated by the pump assembly
- Headlight assembly only uses two H7 bulbs, stacked vertically. The "X" shape of the lights is just reflector design.
does it use H4 bulbs or Honda's own "H4ish" bulb?

Ummm...bizarre! Surprised there is little or no advancement on the rotor/stator/R/R charging arrangement. And, all this for a
significant bump in price. Honda, if you're gonna' be adding all those pounds, throw in a little more reliability innovation, will ya? Nice sleuthing, kaldek!

Well, there ARE only 2 bulbs up front now... then again, so did the 5th gen...
I wonder how the light output is vs. the VTEC?

Tell me about it. The Gold Wing has had a *real* alternator since the '90s! Even then it was only capable of 35 amps, and there is a range of aftermarket options (many capable of 90 amps).
Honda are legendary for their quality of ride and engine reliability, but it's almost like they have Costco designing their electrical systems. Or maybe they're the last team to get a look in and have already had their weight allocation whittled away by the other teams adding weight to their own area?

The 2002 uses standard H4 bulbs, so unless they decided to go backwards I doubt it.

On mine it's two H7s I think, not H4s. Stacked vertically and operate in the same fashion as the Blackbird, i.e. one bulb for dipped beam both for main beam.
