First gen exhaust

Can anyone direct me to an aftermarket, or reasonably priced NOS exhaust system, muffler and pipes, for an 84 VF700F? I am absolutely... he hem... EXHAUSTED from scouring the net and this forum only to find a request for a salvage yard that will certainly only yield a worse example than I already have, if I'm lucky. It seems that the cutoff for the aftermarket is 1986.

All non sarcastic replies will be greatly appreciated.

I hate to tell ya, but finding one is gonna be hard. It gets harder every year. Your best bet is to keep an eye out here, on ebay, and other junkyards to see if something pops up. It took me a couple years to find my Vance & Hines 2-2 system.

Any aftermarket exhaust on the 1st gen or earlier that removed the cross-over pipes is going to be LOUD. I've never heard an example that had been modified from the dual-can stock system to a single-can that wasn't uncomfortably loud and obnoxious. With my own Gen1 it came with an aftermarket Kerker from the PO. I tried a number of different options short of replacing with OEM pipes and crossover and nothing really was quiet enough for the street IMHO. The closest thing that wasn't totally obnoxious (but still partially obnoxious) was the Yosh quiet series can.

The fact that the bike will be obnoxiously loud (not just to you but everyone within blocks of you) coupled with the loss of the C-stand makes going from the stock set-up a poor choice IMHO. If you do insist on going with an aftermarket exhaust on the Gen1 make sure to sell the stock system on eBay. They were going for quite the premium a few years back when I was still looking for a set for mine (around 2001-2002). I'm sure they haven't got any easier to find. One of the reasons I finally sold the bike and got a Gen5 was the fact that it was cheaper to do that than replace the pipe and make it quiet enough to ride. I got sick of the dirty looks, and spooking cattle/horses at the side of the road when I was riding.

Also, please don't move in near me. I videotape all loud exhausts in the neighborhood and get pictures of the plates and send them into the DOT. I'm sick of that shit waking me up in the middle of the night. I don't care if it is punk kids with fart-can exhausts on their ricer civics, hardleys or sportbikes.

Does anyone know where to get supplies (in the USA) to fabricate a set of headers for motorcycles?

I am thinking that I could just tig weld different curves to get the profile I want and then put on some aftermarket slip ons.

With enough pictures I am sure i could fabricate a set.

I had Meccom Corp in Michigan replicate the bends of my Vance & Hines 2-2 system in 304 stainless. Cost was high for what I got, as we were not on the same page. I need to make the mount flanges, end flanges, collectors, and cut and weld the pipe to fit.

"Loud and obnoxious" are certainly relative terms. If someone is taking pictures of license plates, their idea of loud may not be considered "normal". I ride with 2 other R's and an F that have pipes and they are quite quiet. I think the V4's are quite a bit quieter than their I4 cousins with pipes. The sound is just different. A pipe with an intact baffle will only be slightly louder at high rpms than a stock pipe but still gives a nice low growl.

I used something similar to these...Mandrel bends


Welded them myself and then ceramic coated them myself as well.

Do you also chase young kids on bikes with your hair in curlers while wielding a rolling pin? :laughing6-hehe: I'm all for enforcing a noise limit, but if I were a policeman I'd probably have a good laugh over your actions. They can't take any action outside of increasing patrols in your area anyway.

Here in Indiana we do not have any noise restrictions except for ordinances in some metropolitan areas. Beyond that, the Police can't do anything about it, nor do I think they care. They are off taking care of business that protects us from harm.

Even though I live in the country I still try to keep it down if I come home late. I'm sure the folks down the street don't appreciate the sound of a booming twin as much as I do. Plus they know where I live.

Thanks for the link. I may try to get some of those mandrel bent ends and fab something together once I get the bike mechanically riding right and not leaking oil.

Just about to put a new MC Distributing exhaust on Ebay. 4-2 with front/rear headers like the race system. Haven't used it, but even the catalogue said it would be very loud.

The least expensive mandrel bent 304 SS tubing I've found was on eBay or you can order directly and pay with PayPal. If you are going to get more than one bend, put together a list and email them for a quote with accurate shipping or they charge per item. Be sure to look at what bends they have and use their part number or terminology so yer on the same page. Burns has some nice stuff and is a good source for how to design the merge collectors but they are easily 2x as expensive.

This is a good question. Supper Trapp has universal back ends you can use. The rest of the Exhaust parts are on EBay.

With regards to noise, I think some of today's mufflers and baffle designs are better than those when the 1st generations were new. Oval and Tri-Oval cans are much quieter and still sound good compared to the round cans of the 80'. I think it has to do with the shape of the can and the tapered shape of the core. Either way, they are much quieter without sounding weird like the V&H Quietech or Yoshimura's Zyclone quiet can with the insert.

Mine had (what the PO said was) a Bassani 4 into 1 exhaust on it. Can anyone confirm this from this photo? It wasn't particularly loud. Might check with them. Probably not produced anymore.
