Hi,
I current have a 1996 VFR750. Previously I've owned a VFR400 (NC21) and had a mate with a RC36 the same as mine. ALL these bikes have had an audible 'tick' at idle as mine did when I purchased it. However in the last 10k mine has worsened to a fairly heavy problem.
Symptoms
Start engine when cold and its quiet and smoooooth as you would expect.
Within a minute the 'normal' regular tick arrives
Within another minute the 'tick' has increased to a rattle in the same 'sound frequency' as the tick (a multi tick if you like)
This tick/rattle is not at a defined regularity.
Normally I'd say this was a cam chain sound (its is quite simlar in many respects) but obviously this would be difficult on a VFR750. I'm thinking maybe the gears are worn maybe creating this rattling sound. Certainly the sound dissipates as the revs rise and more pressure is put on the gears (although the bike makes more noise and hence does mask some of the noise!).

in all likly hood its the valves out of adjustment.. but i am the deaf guy.. you need to listen around the motor and pinpoint where its coming from.
you need to remember.. the heat makes everything expand..thats why the valves have that gap.. it shrinks to almost nothing when hot.. so.. you may be hearing some valves to tight.. or some to loose.. or both.. rare for a vfr.. but known to happen.
Yeah had a listen with my extension bar around the engine and nothing just a nice smooth whirring noise. As for valves well its not really a valve noise its definitely something else. If it were valves then I should have though some top end clatter would emanate from the top of the head but nothing.

Ooh! Ooh! I know this one - it's the scissor gears on the cam drive. I know because my first real VFR (1990 VFR750) did it (first v4 was a 1985 vf500). I took it back after a few weeks because of the ticking, and the mechanic said, "They all do that after a while - your's is actually a quiet one!"

I think what he's saying is the solution is to get better earplugs, an iPod or keep the revs up so you can't hear it. :musik20:
yeah I know. Had a quick check around the net. I do love how some people think it sounds like a Ducati! Its not exactly that 'nice'. I'll see what my local shop says with regard to a 'fix' for it as personally I'd say it makes what was a smooth whirring machine sound like a washing machine with a few handfuls of nut and bolts thrown in.
Is it still there whatever position the clutch is in?

Good point, could also be the clutch rattling around in neutral, does it make the loud rattle when driving?
There was a technical bulletin that applied to 4th gen VFRs. IIRC, there was too much end play on camshaft ends on some bikes and they tended to tick against the end cam shaft retainers. The fix involved drilling a small hole into an oil passageway to let in more oil in that area to cushion the end with more oil film. It was a free service from dealer's service departments back then. Supposedly, the tick was not really harmful for the engine but was just irritating to owners. Not all bikes were affected (my 95 was not), but the fix supposedly worked very well. Not sure if the dealers are willing to do it for free anymore. Not sure about valves causing the ticking. Aren't valves supposed to get tighter as the engine wears = less noise?? Unless something else in the head is wearing out?

Anyone drilled those holes ? Any effect ? I'm experiencing the same ticking noise.
My 95 does it too, I just ignore it now and drive it like I stole it. If it was a terminal problem it would have hand grenaded long ago.

Hello Rugsta,
As previously mentioned, use a long bar/screwdriver and hold one end to your ear and place the other end on the engine (remove as much panels as possible).
this way to pinpoint the source of the tick.
My 4th gen ticks as well...

Hey guys I have a similar problem except that mine starts about 5000-5200 revs and gets louder as rpm climbs. It has made this sound for a while now but it is getting steadily worse and I'm kinda getting concerned. Right now I need my bike running because I cant afford to drive my suburban! Also mine sounds like it is coming from the right front cylinder (no.1?) only. Clock shows 67k and I know she is due for a valve adjustment.
ANY help would be greatly appreciated!
Are there any VFR riders in the Brian-College Station area that might be willing to come by and take a listen? Maybe lend a hand? I have never had my bike that far apart before and would really like to have somebody there that has even if they just "supervise". If I can afford I will be happy to provide you with some free beer and maybe lunch!
