It may not be the same, but when I purchased my salvage 5th gen (it had been underwater in a basement for 5 days during the Boston floods a few years ago) The LCD was not working either.
I purchased a new LCD from Honda (I needed to show parts receipts to show how I had "rebuilt" the salvage bike to get it registered) and during the trouble shooting phase I found a broken wire on the printed circuit that backs the panel.
I soldered a power wire aroung the break and have been running the bike as suck for 4 years and 30k miles now.
I read on some other forums and found only a few threads... somebody indicated that due to exposure to water, some of the traces on the back of the LCD PCB had become corroded and after cleaning the back of it using some cleaning product, everything was good. Or something like that.
So I finally go to it this afternoon. As was mentioned, some traces on the back of the cluster were corroded.
Judging by the mess of it, I'll be in there again for another problem later. My bike has 138,000km in case you are wondering.
Al last... I can contribute to this forum. Here are pics of my repair:
This is the first fault I found. It is the ground for the LCD. The trace was broken, no continuity.

I thought I had it licked, but it wouldn't work after hookup, so I looked further, and found the hot side also broken(I'm sure I checked it FIRST!)

So there you have it. If your LCD is dead, AND you checked the CLOCK fuse, this is likely your fix.
I used 22AWG solid wire. I crimped and soldered the crimp after, just to be sure.
Hope this helps someone else someday. VFRD has helped me A TON since I got my viffer.
The LCD on my '98 is fine, except for the odometer. Everything else works and displays properly but no display on the odometer. No corrosion on the circuit board, help please!
