Newbie to this forum. I recently purchased an 87 viffer 700 with no title. The bike was an insurance wreak as i did a search just to make sure it wasnt stolen. But i dont know who is holding the salvaged title and i want to get her tagged and licensed for the road. Can anyone offer help on what to do or creative ways to get it done?

Buying it would save you a lot of paperwork, but of course you'd have to swap all your parts over. Think of it as a good opportunity for cleaning?
A bike with a clean title is worth far more than one with a salvage title, which salvage designation can NEVER be cleared off the title. Go for it and do the work!
Thanks all. I have thought about swapping frames. The problem i have with that is with shipping costs the frame becomes more than i paid for the bike. Unless the frame is cheap enough I'd like to try other options. There are still other parts i still have to buy for the bike. Hows a "home built" bike work? Possible option?

home built or special construction does work, but the state police have to come and inspect the bike and attach a new vin plate to the frame. The only problem is insuring it afterwards. They will laugh at you and/or charge you 10 times what you should be paying.

Shipping mine from NY to Kentucky shouldn't be too bad. Send me a PM, let's see if we can work something out. My asking price is probably a lot lower than you think.
Kentucky is one of the few states that allows a salvaged title with a Certificate of Destruction to be rebuilt and retitled. Most states will not allow that for a CD and the VIN is forever dead. Do you know if you bike is just salvage or was it totaled and has a CD? Take your paper work and VIN down to the DMV and ask them, you might actually get someone who knows what they are talking about and what paperwork you need to do what.
The problem with the custom built bike is they will want receipts for everything you have done to it and before and after pictures. They don't inspect custom built bikes in Florida, they just want to see that you paid tax on everything you bought and sometimes make an attempt to make sure it isn't stolen, some how. This may be different in some states, especially if you have vehicle inspections.

The bike was salvaged. But i dont have the title and dont know who does. The salvaged tite is floating around somewhere. Also the DMV here dont know much of anything and arent very helpfull in anything. And with all the plastic damage i was thinking streetfighter. Which should also help with a "custom build"

Replied. Check out www.customfighters.com for streetfighter ideas. That's what I was going to do with mine, until I decided that enough was enough and I have too many projects.

Take some pictures of it as it is now just in case you have to go the custom new VIN route.
Where did you buy this from? What paper work do you have? What did the DMV say? You may have to go back down there and talk to a different person, I've done this when I didn't get the answer I wanted and the second person I spoke to was able to help me. Some feel obligated to help you get things done while others always wanna come up with a reason why you can't.

So it's possible to have too many motorcycle projects? Hmmm......so there is a point where someone can have "enough" motorcycle projects and not start any more? I'll have to think on this awhile.

Not too many motorcycle projects, just too many projects in general. House, family, car, AND 4 bike projects is too much. Yep, I don't have all my projects documented here yet... :pinocchio: Everything's at the mercy of our good 'ole enemies, Time and Money...
The only paper work i have is a half A*% bill of sale showing what i paid for the bike and the rec's of parts im buying. The DMV just told me to try and find the original owner. How i can do that on my own without any records idk. I came across a black streetfighter on this site and it caught my eye. It would be cheaper to do that then buy all new plastics and should be able to pass better as a custom build that way too.

Who did you buy it from? Try asking the DMV if they can tell you who the owner on the title is or if it was totaled which would make it property of the insurance company.
I agree with the fighter approach. Trying to fit broken plastics with bent mounting brackets and other cobbled mess is a night mare and it never looks right. Plus fighters are cool if done right.
Swapping frames is exactly what I did. I bought a really nice condition VFR for $400 and had it shipped from Florida, but the title was long lost and to get one recovered by one of those title recovery websites was very spendy. I found a titled frame on a forum and swapped it. It took a bit of work, but it was a bit easier because I wasn't putting the engine back in.... (converted mine to electric)..... but now its titled and ready to be insured.
You'll probably spend more time and money trying to find the title or get someone to recover it than you would just buying the titled frame and shipping it and swapping it, and it'l be worth more in the end.
