83 VF750 Revival

Major milestone today. The engine is running. I put the engine back in on Sunday and today I fitted in the carbs (that was a bitch). After rerouting the wires and cables, connecting everything, installing the cooling system, it was time to see if it was worth putting it back together. Booster cables on, it turned over nice, and when the oil light turned off, I added a bit of gas in the carbs . . . and it roared to life. Smoke bellowing out the exhaust, idle all over the place, but it quickly settled down and began to run very smoothly amid a chatter in the rear head. Check that one later. The smoke is all but gone and I'm really happy. Tomorrow, I'll work on the body a bit and get my friend to paint it all white. That'll do for this year.

Just about ready to be fired up.

Man, these carbs were a bitch to put on. But in the end, they work great.

Now the first setback: Broke one of the caliper bolt. I need to find a right caliper bracket.

Could be a loose cam chain, or cam wear in the rear head. Did you check the cams for wear?

Thanks, mate. I bought a used set of tensioners of ebay when I first got the bike. The cams are fine, but it I'll check the valves anyway and the chain. Should it be the problem, then I'll do your mod and put it back together.

Today: prep the bodywork for painting (I already repainted the frame to silver), check the valves and chain, extract the broken bolt or find a used caliper bracket and bolt.

Later: replace the brake fluid, fork seals, get a battery, put the bodywork, get a master link for the chain. Take for a test ride.

If, and only if, it goes to plan, it should be running next week.

Okay, now back to work.

Done! Finally. I just bought a caliper of ebay, which I'm waiting for it, and it will be road worthy. Still louder (internal, even after re-tightening the valves twice) than I'd like it to be, but it's gonna have to be that way. I painted it white to be more acceptable to the majority of people ( I hope) and will put it up for sale next week once I got the caliper. Not sure how much I'll get for it, but I should recuperate the money put into it then a bit more. It's been fun at times and aggravating in others. But it runs great, fires up in an instant. Now the other V4 . . .
