Full Exhaust Gut

Tonight I installed my fully gutted 6th gen exhaust... What an incredible sound! Exactly what I was looking for, and worth every penny of the $20 paid (used off this forum). However I did have one concern:

It might be the but Dyno, but the bike definitely seems a little sluggish when I crack the throttle. Also the Vtec transition seems less abrupt - but in a bad way... Has anyone else noticed this?

I'm assuming a power commander and a tune might be the next step, but it just seemed odd that of all the posts I read about exhaust gutting, not one mentioned a performance decrease. Please advise

But wait a second, the exhaust and muffler is designed specifically to get the engine to run smoothly throughout the rev range. If you just "gut" it out you loose everything. Why would you ruin the (very expensive) exhaust system this way. And how loud is it now? Do we really need another loud bike out there giving us all a bad name?

Wow I don't know what to say - My stock exhaust is intact - I picked up a 2nd exhaust for $20. This is a very common modification... and no I won't give you a bad name :laughing6-hehe:

Well I know a lot of VFR riders and I've never heard of any of them putting on a gutted exhaust. Aftermarket sure but never a butchered stock system. What's it supposed to achieve besides making the bike run like crap? :fing02:

Well it is intended to remove the restrictive sound dampening - hoping to bring about increased performance (once tuned)... Also sheds pounds (the innards of the stock exhaust are elaborate & heavy). Not to mention it sounds comparable to the Staintune system for over $1000 less. and yes it seems loud in this video because he is hammering it. However I find that since the exhaust gut I am tempted to drive more slowly, and enjoy the smooth growl of the V4

Amen to that!
Besides a little more has noise never hurt anyone.

Read the forums on here - there a re a LOT of riders who can't afford a full aftermarket system and instead do various kinds of gutting to 'improve' the sound. It's not really very kind of you to put down someone else who is having a go at this.

I gutted the exhaust on my 5th gen and noticed nothing but positives and it is no louder than other bikes with aftermarket pipes....and for way cheaper. I didn't just gut it though, I built a "baffle" on the same premise as aftermarket cans.

Just sayin

Dozens of members on this forum have gutted their 6th Gen exhausts including me. Full guts aren't as common but there are numerous ways to partially gut your exhaust and it has no effect on power.

If Symbiotix wants to gut his exhaust, surely its up to him.

All it would do is reduce the back pressure to zero, the same as any aftermarket exhaust.

Most of the back pressure in the standard exhaust would be from the CAT, so his mods shouldnt make much difference, but a powercommander and a bit of a play are probably required to optimise it.

Godd on Ya for having a go. :fing02: :fing02:

Symbiotix...
I actually had very similar thoughts after a partial gut on my exhaust but I am almost certain now it was a result of test riding before letting the bike warm up. The VTEC won't begin to engage until the bike has reached at least 149 degrees (I could be wrong but I'm pretty certain on this one). I suggest taking it for another test ride after letting it warm up completely.

Took the long route to work today, and my concerns are pretty much vanquished. All the power is there, but the Vtec transition is definitely less pronounced. This might come as a benefit to some, but I kinda liked the kick in the pants that it gave me - kept me in check

It is also nice that the exhaust note is very silent at hwy speeds, even with the full gut - no droning. I'll try and make a definitive video so others can hear the full gut in different driving conditions.

For $20, that sounds EXACTLY like the Staintune on my VFR800

Here's a quick vid of the bike at idle... as soon as I got the camera out it stated to rain so no driving vids until the weekend. My camera actually did a pretty good job at replicating the sound.

Great sound! Sort of aggressively smooth. I say that as long as you're not suffering a performance hit, whatever you did has worked well. Post a riding vid when you can. I'd love to hear those pipes at the VTEC transition, or even at 11,000 rpm.
