been reading up on my new bike cause I had the insurance company call me up cause they need some info on my bike and they asked me a question that I had no idea what the answer was. They asked me if I owned a 08 Honda VFR800F or a 08 VFR800FRI with abs.
Now here is the dumb question what is the difference between the two modles? I thought all the vfr had linked brakes is this not true. Does on have linked and the other have real abs? is there a difference in performance? what hell am I missing here? Help me understand

Some models do indeed have true ABS which is different than linked brakes. ABS models in stock form are easily distinguished by a pulser ring on the right side of the front wheel, gold calipers on the front and a remote adjuster on the rear shock.

Yes all VTECS have DCBS (linked brakes) but that has nothing to do with ABS. A VTEC can additionaly have ABS and, as Lee mentions, you can recognise an ABS equiped bike by the pulser rings and the ABS warning light on the dash.
Different insurers may list bikes in different ways, but most of the time 6th gen. VFRs are listed as VFR800 for non-ABS models and VFR800A for ABS-equipped models.
Also, IIRC, the 5th gen. ('98-'01) is usually listed as VFR800FI - "FI" for Fuel Injected - as it was the first generation of VFRs with FI. You'll very rarely see any 6th gen. with this model designation, tho I think I've seen a 6th gen. listed as a "VFR800i" a couple times.
And your insurer may be asking because the rate is different for the ABS vs the non-ABS model. (One company I called for estimates gave me different rates.)
thanks all. Mine is ABS cause of the light on the dash is what I told her. Is there a difference in power between the 2? or is it just that the ABS model is a couple more pounds heavier

Yea the rates are different, and not the way you would think, before i bought mine I quoted both ways to see if I could save some $$ getting an ABS model, hoping that might offset the cost of ABS, but to my surprise the ABS model was more to insure.
