Fasteners

Even though this topic gets covered now and then, I have to do it again. Something impressed me and I'm a hard ole bastage to impress..... :biggrin:

Whether you have trouble with the Honda plastic body fasteners or not, get some of the "TR 240 GM Push Type Retainers" from The Fastener Warehouse.

25 of them will cost ya 6 bucks. I got some in today and they are SO FAR SUPERIOR to the Honda fasteners, I'm replacing all of mine. I know how to deal with the Honda fasteners but they do weaken after being taken off and on over time. The TR 240's are MUCH more precision designed and built even though somewhat the same principal. I pushed a pin in and out a bunch of times trying to make one get loose or break and it ain't gonna do it.

Just another way to spend your money.....but worth it, IMO. :fing02:

I have been thinkin about some of those...thanks for the review. Now to find a cheaper Frankenbolt! McMaster Carr is 6 bucks...which is cheaper than Honda...

About anyplace is cheaper than Honda. Check out the price of ONE Honda fastener.

I bought a bag of these a while back, and I agree that they work great.

$6.00 + $4.95 = the price of about 3 inferior Honda fasteners.

Yeah, so about that frankenbolt...

I lost one on a ride a couple weeks ago and have since "made" a replacement. Of course it doesn't stick out like the frankenbolt does, but I just modified an aluminum spacer (for the shoulder) and epoxied it to a stainless bolt and nut.

What are the other alternatives? I have a set of QRPs from sargent, but they require drilling, and I don't really want to make it that easy to remove the rear cowl. Anyone have a link to the McMaster Carr part?

OK, got my order today. I'd ordered 100 of them...$24 including shipping, so that's 24 cents each. They don't requires any mods to work with the VFR, you do have to push just a little harder on the center part to lock them in, but they seem a lot heavier duty than the stock fasteners. Here is a pic:

The fastener on the right is an OEM item from my 07 Honda VFR Interceptor. They are a common fastener used on Honda bikes and seem to be pretty easy to destroy. They run nearly $3 to $6 each at the dealer.

The fastener on the left is a "GM Push Type (Ret. 1/4" hole, TR 240B)", which I ordered from thefastenerwarehouse.com and I'm happy with this purchase.

The bottom line for me: Honda priced themselves out of selling these. If they had been reasonable, maybe even $1 each, I'd just keep buy them when I needed to.

Ditto. They are a little tighter but a much stronger joint between panels. Honda fasteners are called "aftermarket parts". I don't blame them for pricing them like they do. I'd rather sell less and make a certain amount of money than sell more and make the same amount. Price a part for anything from Caterpillar. It's just the way it works.
