Satin Black 5th Gen Engine

While my frame and forks are at the welders thought I�d clean up the starter motor and engine.

Sealed everything up with tape and plastic bags
Brushed on 'Gunk' Engine degreasant
Used Scotchbrite pads and wirewool on the suborn furry cases
Washed off with water
Used a dremel with various wire brush attachments to get in all the tricky places
Sprayed with PJ1 Fast Black Satin finish engine and case paint (rated to 500 Degrees)

Side cases will be removed and sprayed separately as replacing the engine bolts with socket head A4 stainless bolt kit from Ebay

Quite pleased with how it came out! :cheerleader:

Starter motor had gone very rusty so stripped and treated with rust remover. Replaced the mild steel m5 bolts with stainless threaded rod.
I have some stainless tube on order to cover the threads showing and a new o-ring before re-installation.

Any chance I could temp you into polishing the side covers, or maybe painting them an aluminum silver color, to add some contrast?

It's just not my thing...sorry! Shiny bolts I can do. It's Satin, Gloss or Matt... any colour as long as it's Black!

Maybe some brushed finish alloy too.

Where's Timmy? he'll back me up on this for sure! :blush:

Whoops!! Now those motors are going to be too pretty to ride the bike. Maybe some Harley polish would work good!!! :goofy:

Of course it's the ultimate mod, performance has increased by .001% all that dirt is really heavy and effects cooling too! :goofy:
Don't worry. You should see the state of my 100,000+ mile 98. it's a well used daily hack :biggrin:

:offtopic: I just pulled both sprockets and the chain off my '98, as well as the chain cover et al. There was so much compacted black gook in there that I have no idea how the chain was even able to move. I had to use a putty knife to get it off, and have already gone through two cans of WD40. I'm still not done. Might as well clean everything up while it's apart. I'll probably gain the equivalent of 10 HP by the time I'm done.

Not sure if you guy's get the same product elsewhere in the world. this seams to do the trick

Thanks. I used Gunk about 100 years ago, but forgot all about it. I just picked up some during my lunch break.
The WD40 doesn't taste like fish oil, so probably just a myth ( :goofy: ).
