Repainting Hardbags

So tonight I bring in my hardbags to pack them with workout cloths, etc. to commute in tomorrow to work. I look at my hardbags and notices some nasty scratches on them.......I didn't put them there! I just got the bike serviced and brought it home yesterday. Someone there was pretty damn careless about how they parked all the bikes in the shop and my bike paid for it. I'm PISSED! Already called the shop (they don't open until Tuesday again) and emailed them with pics. My only solution is to have them pay for repainting them ('03 Silver), either all of it or at least 75% of the cost as I do have the normal little pit marks on them (but no scratches like these!).

Any guess on what a good painter would charge to repaint them? Does my solution sound reasonable to take to the shop that worked on my bike (they flushed the brake/clutch system and installed new sprokets & chain for me was all)?

That really sux if it all happened at the Dealer! :ohmy:

A paint shop could easily repair them for a few hundred, less than half the cost of new. I think it's a reasonable request!

I think you should have they pay for it. If it wasn't there before, it's their fault and they should pay. As for the shop rates, that is kind of a case by case basis. Pictures can only show so much. If you can't catch a fingernail on the scratches, a shop may try to buff them out as best as possible and may charge you .5 - 1hr at their rates. If it is worse than that, they may charge you anywhere between .5 - 2 hrs of repair time to sand and prime. Then paint time. I'd guestimmate 1 hr repair, 1.5 hr of paint, hazardous waste removal etc... If shop rates are $50 / hr, you may be looking at $250 or so... I did bodywork for 9 years and the repair time is a very big gray area. Good luck... Make the shop pay.

If you remove the lids from the bags yourself, and bring the lids to the body shop, cost should be no more than $200 to repaint.

Thanks for the advice. It just irks me when you "think" you have the bike just the way you want it and then see something like this. The shop by the way was a local race shop. VERY good mechanics (AMA guys) and great owner. Its just one of those things where they got careless stacking all the bikes in the garage in the evening and I got swiped.

I definitely will be asking them to foot the bill to repaint. If not all, then at least 80% of the bill. If they refuse then my business is done with them and my word of mouth of how they treat these situations will spread.

So I got an email from the owner of the shop, stand up guy. He completely understood and told my to drop them by the shop and he would take care of them. I told him I didn't expect them to be any better or worse than when I brought the bike in. So I feel much better now.

So I got my bags back today from the shop that scratched them up. They repainted them both and they look brand spanking new!

Can anyone give me advice on what kind and where I can get some of that clear 3M plastic to put on the front of the bags so it keeps road debris from pitting them again? Thanks!

Check with any local auto body shop. Getting mine done too, with a 3M Auto grade sheild.

darn i wish i did that years ago.

I think Tankslapper(.com?) sells sheets of the stuff, you can probably find it from an industrial supplier like mcmaster.com or MSC / Grainger, etc.
