gauges and indicator lights dead

So the bike is back together and running. The speedometer is gone. An acewell unit is in the mail. My problem is that now the following does not work:

low fuel light
low oil light
neutral light
high beam indicator light
tachometer
temp gauge

The back lights for all gauges work fine. The turn signal lights and instrument panel indicators also work.

I have just replaced the main wiring harness, front to back with one in much better shape. The bike still starts and runs fine, same problem as above though. I did not replace anything beyond the main front fairing stay so all wires going to the gauges and panel are still the same.

The only two grounds I know of on this bike are 1) the negative off the battery, and 2)a green wire on the frame up above the front right coil (#4?) under a fairing stay.

I have cleaned these up well. Any ideas?

fuse??? add another grond to the main green wire.. trust me.. just do it.. and ground the green wires from the r/r straight to the fame too. :fing02:

I will ground the green from the R/R and maybe add another. Should I tap in to anywhere in particular, front or back, if I add another ground?

as for you lights.. not kidding. double check you have plugged them into the right spot.

Blake's Problem-Solving Process

Step 1. Determine the problem: indicator lights and tach not functioning. CHECK.

Step 2. Hum and haw and swear a little, poking randomly at wires. CHECK.

Step 3. Replace entire wiring harness. CHECK.

Step 4. Verify the problem has not been fixed. CHECK.

Step 5. Bitch and moan to the forum. CHECK.

Step 6. Check fuse. Problem solved.

take another look in the back of the gauges.. make sure the connector are in the right place.. look at the color of the wires themselves.. it is possible to put them in the wrong places..
look at the pins.. are they all lined up with a female slot?? a little mixxing and matching can go wrong.. so trippple check it :fing02:

Maybe you missed it... The fuse was burned out. Problem solved. You were right on your first post.

Blakeo, did you wire up the stock speedo, etc or hook up the Acewell? How do you like the Acewell? I assume its the all-in-one deal? I would like to see some pics if you put the Acewell on, Im considering doing this myself. Thanks!

The acewell replaces the speedo because I lost the gear drive with the front wheel swap. I wired in the tach as well but that is all I'm using it for. I got the lowest level one they make in the round gauge series, the 2701, and don't plan to wire up the turn signals or other indicators it has... forget what else it does. Not much.

The tach matches the VFR tach closely and it is spliced into the electric signal line the VFR tach uses instead of wrapping it around a plug wire. The LCD clock is always on and it holds a memory for ODO, trip 1 and 2, laps, avg speed, and max RPM I think. It's a bit of a ghetto install as I wanted to keep the stock gauge pod so it got hacked up. The lens stays off so I can access the function buttons. Pics coming shortly.

Can't say how much I like it yet since I don't even have the speedometer sensor hooked up and the bike is not yet rideable. Time will tell. The unit looks like it is solidly built, stainless gauge pod, waterproof (at least resistant). Mine came with a single metal tab with a single hole to mount it. Luckily this worked well with a little bending to bolt it into the old gauge pod. If you plan to get a more functional unit to replace your instruments... you should get a better mount for it as well.

Taken at night, the flash kinda overpowered the blue backlight. An orange backlight would have been less conspicuous for the old VFR but whatever... good enough for me for now. :-)
