When I mounted the F3 rear wheel on my 86 VFR, I used the 16 tooth front sprocket and the stock 43 tooth F3 rear sprocket.
This increases the gearing ratio (lowers top speed, but pulls harder) about 5% compared to the 18" rear and stock gearing.
With the 110 link chain, this moved the rear axle to the rear of the bike just under 9mm. (not good, longer wheel base = slower turning, and softer rear suspension)
This was OK, but after 44,000 Km the chain & sprockets were done, and I wanted to have some more fun.
So, I changed my gearing to 16/45. This puts the rear axle back to the stock location (9mm closer to the front) and increased the final ratio about 5% more. (10% over stock)
For me, this is the sweet spot!! I really notice the extra acceleration and love it. (who wouldn't!)
Stock the bike revs at about 4,500 RPM at 60 mph, now it revs at 4,800.
If you are putting on a 17" rear, I would really recommend the 16/45 sprocket set up.
