How does one tell if the engine in their VF500F has been replaced when they did the recall back in '84-'85? I'm in the market for one and wanna make sure the bike had it done.

I don't know about back then but today an asterick (*), stamped on at the end of the VIN located on the steering neck, has been used for official recalls.
Ok, I'll check for that. I was just wondering if the cases had a different number on them or some other designation. I suppose I could Google it.
There will be a star stamped into the left side of the frame, just above the swingarm pivot.
It's way easier than that! All recalled VF500 engines had 5-speed gearboxes. If yours has a 6-speed then it's been replaced. This recall happened before most of the bikes hit the dealerships in 84 (the only year affected by the way) so it's highly unlikely you'll ever see one with a 5-speed. I've heard rumors over the years of ONE existing in the US, which I think are false.
