Gas tank help

Hello Ladies/gentlemen

I'm new to the forum. Got this 1987 vfr 700 and need a gas tank. However, its hard to find one and when I do run across one, they ain't cheap. I'm thinking of using a tank from a different year, maybe 90-93 since they appear to have similar designs. I know that there are differences but with a few modifications it would probably fit . Of specific concern are things like sending units and wiring. Any help you guys give is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Sebspeed, may know. He has had tons of older VFRs. (Hint,...add " need sebspeed's help", to the subtitle, of this thead. If he doesn't know,...regardless,....he is the mod king.

As I was looking at the 90-93 tank, mounting would be no issue. I can do some cutting and welding and the tank will fit with no problem. I would then just need to figure out how to make the fuel level sensor fit and work. The 1986-1989 models have a 2-pin electrical connector with one green and one gray/black wire. The 1990-on models have a 3-pin electrical connector with one each brown/black, one gray/black, one green/black wires. This is where I need help at. Thanks.

The 90 on VFR tank has a fuel level sensor in addition to the low fuel indicator light. Looking at the wiring diagram for both 87 and 90 you should be able to use the low fuel light by using the following wires from the 90+ tank.

Tank.......................87 connector
G/B------------------------G/B
Br/B-----------------------Gr/B

Let us (me) know how much work went into getting it to physically mount as I am in the same boat as you in needing a tank.

hi! What is the problem with your gas tank? Mine (from a 1983 750) was all rusty inside ......A load of nuts and bolts with some water and Pine Sole (yep, floor cleaner) did a pretty good job to remove the rought part of it. Just be ready to do some muscle! Then I used KREEM products to remove the remaining rust and to coat the tank in plastic.

If it is dented bad (mine had a knee print in it front the previous owner crash lol), weld some studs and pull those bumps out. If it is minor exterior dammage, just fill those holes with metalox or any fiberglass. (or go to a body shop and pay cash lol)

For the sending unit, usually it is the wire (for the potentiometer) that is broken somewhere. Any guy that work in electronic can rebuild or like mine, weld the connexion back together. If the sending unit is just rusty....diesel is your best friend. Let it soak in if for 2-3 weeks and see the magic

Btw, diesel will work wonderfully for any rusty parts on your bike

I have 3 tanks, all rusty but probably workable from the pile of two parts bikes. If you need one let me know and we can work something out..
They are all from 83s .
