Okay. �I am getting ready to buy an HDD MP3 player. �Which one do you all suggest. �I already have a MP3 cd player and a Rio S35 flash mp3 player for M/C riding. �The next one is for "I don't want to watch TV, I want to veg" use. �Don't let me down. �I know you have opinions.
I have the iPod and love it. Can't compare it to any to any of the others though, never tried any other types. I use mine for everything including motorcycle use.

I've had it for 2 years now and there ARE issues with it, just like with anything else - specifically I use it for snowboarding and that can produce SOME rough situations - soo, the headphone jack is a little fragile on the model I have - the later generation ones (one you would get) has improved that situation...
I ride with it ALL the time - ONE problem - sometimes, when transfering songs from the hard drive to the flash memory (they all do that) the hard drive has to spin - so, if there is any severe bumping on the iPod it MAY lock up. no big deal, just the music stops. once the batteries die you plug it in, and it reboots - I've never tried resetting it, but I think there's a way to do that too - sooo

I voted other cause I've got the Sirius Sattelite Radio on my bike. 60 some odd channeles of ad free music.
Also on the Best Buy thing next time you go in there ask about Rapsody(sp?). It's a legal music download sit. I think it works out to a buck a song. It's 30 days free I think when you sign up too.

I bought an RCA Lyra 1080 a while back. It is a flash player. I'm too skeptical of the hard drives failing on the larger players. This thing only has 128M of onboard memory, but it has an SD memory card slot and you can expand it until you run out of memory. I currently have the 128M onboard and a 256M card in it. That gives me around 75 songs. When combined with the built in radio (which gets pretty darn good reception) that's well over a day's worth of listening. It's so fast downloading that I don't mind erasing and re-copying new stuff every few days.

I've heard good things about that model. The guys in work use it on their rides and love it. More than enough songs for a days ride and it's very small. I think it's about 1 bill at Sam's club, plus the extra card. If you want an Ipod type unit, Dell is now selling one. It's 199 for the 10 meg unit, and more for the 20 meg unit. :cool:
Yup, I paid $100 for my Lyra at Costco. Here's the link. I bought the 256M SD card from Buy.com and got the $15 rebate from SanDisk. It is small and easy to use.
The iRiver HD series have the most functionality and the best sound quality. Twice the battery life compare the iPod. The iPod is seriously overpriced. With the iRiver you also get a built in FM tuner, sound recorder and it also acts as a regular hard drive (can store files on it with drag and drop ease).
Here is a good review of the iRiver player. Search the site for more reviews of HD MP3 players as well. There are comparisons etc.
If that is too expensive for you, go with the Zen Extra from Creative labs. The creative Zen Extras have the least amount of extras, but the most capacity and best sound quality for a cheap price tag.
I have the iRiver iFP-190T. �It's only 256 MB but it does what I need it to do. �If I'm riding long enough to go thru the 50+ songs it can hold I can switch on the FM tuner. The iRiver website lists it for $179 but I've seen them on Amazon for about $150.
For a GREAT pair of isolating earbuds...Etymotic ER-6. These sound great. They aren't hard to "drive" meaning they don't require a headphone amplifier in order to get great sound out of them and are not too expensive for �entry audiophile sound quality. They isolate up to 23dbs of external noise also. Me likey!
Of course, if you are listening to crappy 128kbs MP3s then just get the cheapest set of plugs you can find. I personally listen to 320kbs MP3s with "LAME" encryption from WAV extracted by "Exact Audio Copy" to retain the highest quality from my MP3s...yes...I'm anal about sound quality.
Which of these will connect with my Chatterbox X2? �I want a player to take the humdrum out of riding to work and back.

Did some research this weekend on portable players. �I went ahead and picked up the RCA Lyra 128 MB version for today's ride (but it was too cold and sprinkling rain ...uggh!). �It works great!! �Only $99, but also only holds 21 MP3 songs at an average of 160Kps. �It also has a FM Tuner that works well.
Instead of buying extra SD/MMC memory cards, I'm now going to pick up the IRiver IGP-100 player. �What a nice unit!! �It has 1.5 GB hard drive built in with FM Tuner. �It also accepts more file formats than only MP3 and WMA. �
I sure hope that the Shure Ec2 Earbuds are worth the $100 I just spent to obtain them! �Just placed the order today.
If anyone is interested in saving a few bucks on a 1 day old RCA Lyra 1080 (128 MB memory with FM Tuner) Player, PM me and let me know. I like the unit, but want more space without having to buy flash memory cards.
I have the Sony NetMD. �They can hold up to 5 hours on one mini disk. �The disk are small enough that I normally carry at least 4 disk. �The skip protection works fine up to above 80 mph. �Then it occassionally skips.
I also have a minidisk player in my car and use the same disks in both locations.
Does anybody use one that has a DC power input? I currently use a Sony Discman w/FM tuner. I run power to my tank bag for my Autocom and radar detector anyways, so I just put a cig. lighter socket in there for the Discman too. I hate messing with batteries all of the time. I'm looking to replace the Discman with an MP3 player/FM Tuner, but would like it to have a DC power input.
I voted Sony MD... even though I have a Sharp MD that is a few years old. The thing is awesome. Record/Playback in a unit the size of half a deck of cards. It has 15 hour battery life... tested and proven. Plus it will hold up to 5-hours of music on a disk. :beer:
Thanks for all the replies. CompUSA has the Creative Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra with a 40gb harddrive for $229 after rebates. So I bought it on Sunday. First impressions are positive.
I've got a Nomad Jukebox. Love it. I got the 10 gig size so it was far cheaper around $110. I have yet to fill it up, but I can mix up my music any way I like and not have to keep downloading new playlist. I just create them on the fly.
Plus it can run off of DC which I plug into my powerlet, or off of AA batteries. Haven't had any problems at all with skipping, even at speed.
The only downside is it's size. It is the size of a portable CD player. But I would recommend HDD for quantity of music.

If anything...DVD-A or will supercede the CD format. That or the SACD (I believe it is called). If not, then storage will have to become much cheaper.
The MP3 format looses audio fidelity as it is compressed. Until they develop a compression algorithim that is equal to or surpases SACD or DVD-A, then we'll still have discs of some sort. But...don't worry Lee, you will still have to purchase a different player to listen to SACD or DVD-A.
In reality, I don't think the standard CD format is going anywhere anytime soon. But yeah...MP3s are great! Frickin RIAA hates them...I love 'em. :p
