NC30 VFR400: Epic over fuelling!

Hi all,

I did use the search function but didn't find something suitable.

First some background. I picked the bike up last week from a chap who'd had it sitting in his garage for a number of years due to him having a hip replacement.

Got a new battery for it, new filters, fuel etc. Oil was clean so I left it for now (yes it will be changed asap, but didn't want to fully service it if it didn't run!).

Cut a long story short, got it running, hard to start, ran for a while then conked out and didnt play ball again. Made intermittent firing sounds when turning over (bop, bop, bop).

Smelt fuel so looked down. Fuel was streaming down both sides of the bike!

Plenty of spark, but the plugs are literally being drowned in fuel!

What's the problem? Float levels wrong because of no use? Needle and seat stuck? Carb gaskets rooted?

Can't say for sure but sounds like you need to pull the carbs and check everything you mentioned. Esp. the float levels and gaskets. Sounds like it might be that and some clogged jets.

Hmm yeh. That's what I feared.

Might even be worth taking them off and getting them reco'd and return to factory settings. Can't go wrong then
