idles great no power till about 8000rpm then it takes right off any ideas or sorry its an 86 big difference

Sounds like one or more of your carbs have bad diaphragms. Pull the carb tops and examine them. It can be something as small as a pin hole. Just my $.02. Age eventually gets to everything.
