I'll be picking up a rough '86 VFR700F this week. It starts and runs, but only on choke, and won't take throttle, so of course I'll be going through the carbs. I'd like to replace the float valves, and the petcock leaks. I can't find any aftermarket support for this bike's fuel system. Nothing from KandL, Sirius....not even Honda sells parts for this petcock, even though it looks like I can pay premium prices for the float needles.
Has anyone found fuel system parts for this machine, or have I found the rare unsupported Honda of motorcycles as my project?
I think that petcock can be fixed with new o-rings which you can buy just about anywhere. Speaking of o-rings, you can lay a piece of string in the gasket groove of the float bowl, then measure and order round o-rings instead of pre cut gaskets for those as well. mspseals.com has a good selection.
Pretty sure you can still buy from Honda though. (for a price...)

Cool, thanks.
And....any tips on yanking/cleaning these carbs in particular?
I've done several sets but not a V4 yet...
Squirt a little PB Blaster or WD40 on each carb boot after loosening the clamps, then use a carefully placed pry bar to gently persuade them off. Don't pry on the air plenum. I have a set of brand new carb boots from my aborted 86 project bike if you need them.

billyc on the v4_board sells kits with bowl gaskets. I think a set of 4 is $25
billycarrjr@earthlink.net
Do his kits fit the 86 VFR's?
I can't get on that board, something about all of my email addys is not accepted. I do need the bowl gaskets, these are definately showing their age. Somehow the float valves look really, really good, but if I can find some cheap I'd like to replace them anyway...I'm on a really tight budget till I sell the Vmax....
Anybody know how I can get an email addy that the V4 board will accept?

He's on ebay as well, can't remember his member name there at the moment though... ***edit... he is on ebay as "fngster" ***
Ummmm...I'm cleaning the carbs now. Never seen a float valve seat that was 1) removeable and 2) had its own little filter.
Are there any classic pitfalls to these carbs? I get most of it since it applies to the inline-fours I've done, but there are two holes that aren't freed up. The main, slow, choke, and starter passages are all clear now, as are the passages in the throat of the carb....but these two holes that don't pass the cleaner to anywhere, I'm not sure about them.
I had the same problem on my 86 VFR750. It was the pilot jets. They were all clogged. They need to be cleaned. Most likely thats the idle problem. Check the boots when you remove the carbs. If they are hard or cracked you will need to replace them. Dont separate the carbs, just remove the bowls and clean the pilot jets.
I bought new bowl gaskets for $6 each at this placehttp://www.crc2onlinecatalog.com/bowl_gaskets.htm
Ya'll were right, the idle circuit was quite dirty. Now it's flowing very well. Somehow despite being very careful, I've lost two of the brass washers that go under the air mixture screws. Thankfully I had couple extras left from my last in-line four rebuild that were identical.
Cross your fingers, putting it all back together today!
