How many turns on the pilot screws?

Can you folks offer some advice on where to set the pilot screws?

This '86 VFR700 has Supertrapps but seems to have the original jetting.

I don't know what the caps look like that the EPA mandated for this bike to cover the pilot screws. But, I did not have to remove anything to get at the pilot screws so I assume someone has been in these carbs before. Right?


All four pilot screws were 1.5 turns out when I removed them. The bike was supposedly running well with this setup.
But the manual says they should be 2.5 turns out before doing the idle drop procedure.

How many turns out should I go? I'm ready to re-assemble carbs.

Nevermind. The caps were still on. The manual says to break them off with a pliers. DON'T DO THAT. It broke off the head of the screw. There was enough left to cut a notch for the screwdriver, but the others I heated and worked the cap off whole.

So...if the carbs are bone stock and unjetted, then I'll go ahead and do the 2.5 turns the manual specifies, unless ya'll have other experience.


What kind of tool are ya'll using to get at these pilot screws when the carbs are installed on the bike?
