4th oil change, looking sketchy? (metal chunks)

Got bout 8000 miles on the bike, this is the 4th change (600, 2000, 4000 previous). Last oil change was amsoil 10w40.

This look normal to you? Them 2 chunks are bout the size of a popcorn kernal.

Looking closer at the chunks they look almost black. Its possible they are rocks that fell out of the bottom belly pan when i went to change the filter, but i dunno. All teh small chunks definetly look metallic tho.

Looking closer at the chunks they look almost black. Its possible they are rocks that fell out of the bottom belly pan when i went to change the filter, but i dunno. All teh small chunks definetly look metallic tho.


Hmm, inspecting more of the chunks its looking more and more like gravel. Unless metal can become totally black. I even found a few white pieces which is definetly sand. I think the oil that drained out of the oil filter caught dirt when it drained through the bottom of teh body work.

Dunno, i think im gonna just have honda check it out anyways. And next oil change inspect the oil before i take off the oil filter....

Assuming you still have the oil you drained why don't you send off a sample to

for analysis. I always clean the area surrounding he drain plug and the filter itself before I change the oil.

I am guessing if you had chucks like that in your oil the the motor would be making all kinds of bad noises...if it ran at all. You could cut open the old filter and look at that.

I am with the road crap falling out of the fairing theory as well. Unless its crap left over from assembly, but I doubt it.


I have used Blackstone Labs, good outfit. If you are concerned drain the oil after a few miles and send a sample off. Make sure its a clean catch....that is fill the test container directly from the oil as it is draining, not from the drain pan. Clean the drain plug area prior to draining. Kinda like an urine sample :blush:

Check with a magnet, and see if it will pick anything up.......

Also, if you still have the filter you took off, cut into it and see if there is a collection of metal inside. That will give you a very good idea what is going on in there. It's not a bad practice to cut into them during your change. If there are parts coming apart, the filter could collect all the pieces and you would never see anything in the oil you change.

You should first decide if it's metal or gravel. This should be a very simple procedure. If it's gravel then there's no point in taking it up with Honda
