hard-wiring regulator/rectifier?

I read somewhere when I was researching the different models of 80's VFRs that the R/R connections was weak, and that I should fuse the wires coming out of it and skip the connector.

Is this true for the 86-87 VFR700/750?

The bike seems to be holding a charge just fine, but it has less than 5k miles on it. I've ridden it less than 50 miles.

Will hard-wiring it keep it from burning out?

Or should I just pick up a second one and keep it under the seat, counting on this one to burn up?

Who knows their way around the charging system on these bikes? Please enlighten me!

By searching this topic, you will find a well stocked supply of information about VFR R/R's. Hardwiring is a good way around the weak points of the connectors involved with the R/R circuit.

One way to do it is to add twisted and soldered jumper wires around each connection in the plugs. This allows you to just cut the jumpers and replace the R/R under away from home emergency conditions if need be.

Adding heavier gage wires from the stator and spot clean ground connections are also in the mix as well as adding extra ground wires to the frame.

Search in the 3/4th gen, we are all dealing with the same situation, same R/R, same connector, etc. Pull your connector and inspect the contacts with a magnifying glass to see if the grooving has started or the female crimp lugs have started to unroll and open up from the male terminal. There is a picture of it in my gallery.

this is my personal set up that i have done to many bikes with great results.
this his HOOPDC'S 95 vfr750. :fing02:

Regulator rectifiers absorb 3 strong alternating currents (AC)
from the stators yellow wires, and change them to a steady stream of direct current (DC) via the red wire. .
if the R/R gets to much juice it sends the overflow to the ground with the green wire..


however.. the green wire is kinda wimpy and runs to the main harness and meets a bunch of other wires with juice going through them..so the flow gets a bit hot...
and heat build up is what kills the R/R

ok.. take a sip of coffee...breath..
if your not deaf like me ..put on AC/DC's "long way to the top"

sooooo, what you need!
i am assuming you know who to solder and have an mini or electric soldering iron,..if not.. get one and practice a bit.

you need green wire,eyelets, a brown wire, connection ends, a computer fan, heat transfer compound, a wire brush and a pick. :comp13:

take r/r and stator wires ..disconnect them. take the pick and remove the tanks from the blocks and scrub them clean!

IN YOUR CASE....
CUT THE BLOCKS OFF!!
ADD MORE YELLOW>> AND HARD WIRE THE STATOR TO THE R/R :fing02:

now.. take the eyelets and solder them to the green wires. if your wire is thin you can double up or triple if needed.
make 3 off them about 5 inches long.. you can cut them short if needed.

find your tail connection and splice in one of the eyelet extensions and bolt it to the frame .. taking a little paint of helps with the connection. do this with the green wire coming from the R/R and the bunch of green wires up at the front of the bike.

take your computer fan..(this one from a dumpster..RECYCLE!)
and fit it over your R/R.. you may need to make a mounts for it.. this one was perfect.. just needed a shave to open the spot for the plug.

drill the mounting holes.. then remove the R/R and put lots of heat transfer compound on it.. this is just a dab.. dont be shy with it. :biggrin:

mount your R/R and fan.. ground the fan neg wire and and the connection plug on the positive. splice in the brown wire to the power wire for your brake light. brown is power accessory on hondas. :fing02:

this may seem like overkill... but overkill in the garage is MUCH better that a dead bike on the road! :fing02:

EXCELLENT!

A thousand thanks, that VFR is going up on the lift next week for the mods.

I titled it today. The PO had put less than a thousand miles on it in ten years. I can't believe it's running so well, just some hiccups now and then.
Pretty sure I'm keeping it, the riding position is extremely comfortable for me and the power is useable, steady and predictable. Oh, and there's plenty of it! :biggrin:

Now that the carbs are sorted, I'm digging around the wiring and I don't think I understand:

There are red/green wires coming from the RR and there are yellow wires too.
There are two connectors.

Do I hard-wire the yellows? Or all of them?

And, how do I run a more solid ground? Is the RR grounded to the frame? Do I just run a wire from the engine ground up to the body of the RR?

And I definatley don't understand about the jumper wires, how will they help?

Again, I really appreciate the help...I'm terrible with electrics but I'm trying not to let it scare me away....

When hard-wiring the RR, do I only hard wire the yellow wires from the stator? Or do I hard wire all the wires including the red and green ones?

you hard wire all the yellow.. those are weak spots from the stator to the r/r..
do the rest as stated above
