Hey guys, I have a quick question about my 2006 VFR. I just purchased it with 200 miles on it and I'm wanting to throw a bigger rear tire on it. I'd like to go with a 190, but I'm afraid the bigger tire will rub the chain guard. Anyone know if it will clear it or not? I was thinking I could just take a little area off of the stock guard with a dremel tool until I get ready to put a hugger/chain guard combo on it.

Anyone been through this?

Thanks!

Hi, welcome and congrats! :fing02:

In general installing a 190 on a VFR's 5.5" rear wheel will add No positive results at all, the only possible plus is purly cosmetic!
I would not reccomend it!

No, dont do it. A 190 will make the handling worse. It doesnt look any better either. It's not like a car.

Putting a 190 on your rim will actuall give you less of a footprint on the road. The tire is wider, but going on a smaller rim, this causes the tire to be squished in or more triangulated. The handling will be wrong because tire profile will be diffirent from the front.

It's not worth the money, dont do it.

Why do you want a bigger tire on the rear? Is it for a bike night at the local Hooters? Do you want to slow the handling down so it doesn't transition side to side as easily? Or perhaps someone you know will give you free rear tires but you must be able to mount a 190?

PS Welcome aboard....dont get angry but I was just wondering why...

+1.... A mc tyre has a curve that is constructed for each wheel size and if your tyre is bigger than the wheel it is suppose to be on will have a smaller footprint (As Soichiro has already mentioned). I don't know if your wheel is the wrong size, but it sounds like it doesn't fit.
I'm sure there is a chart/or whatever that shows what tyres fit a 5.5 (17")wheel. But "BaileyRock" would be "one" of the more informed when it comes to which will work better.
Myself... I'd wouldn't up size mine if it would fit, unless the front could be balanced to the rear.... And I don't even know if that would be better over all...........Plus the bigger the tyre the better the chance of hydroplaning on wet roads....

I ran a 190 race rear because I got it very cheap. Did two track days and some fun rides up Angeles Crest with it. Little different at first but no ill effects I could discern. I ran track air pressure so the footprint was modified. I like the 180 profile much better because they are usually cheaper and like everyone else said have a better profile and footprint at recommended pressures. But if you want to run 190s for some reason I don't think it a huge problem. See if you like it. Lot's of 600cc class club racers on the WERA forum put them on their 5.5 rims but my guess is they are only riding their bikes on the track. One more thing. Your gearing may suffer from the taller circumference of the 190. I shortened gearing on my front sprocket and it pulled so nicely that I left it that way even with the 180s. Minus 1 tooth on the front sprocket.

I know I know... this is a 6th gen thread...

I however run the 190/55/17...

I actually was looking for a larger tire with a different 'spread' since I felt like I was running out of tire...

larger footprint at angle is what I'm getting with these tires, and I have made believers in 8 more guys this year alone just for that reason.

They all have noticed the difference. *no dis on Baileyrock or anyone else out there MY PERSONAL experience and opinion*

I also haven't run with another person on the bike since I made this change. That's the kicker.

I am able to drag harder longer and faster with the 190/55 than I was with the 180.

ONLY solo riding though...

I also changed up the front end of my bike and rear end of the bike AND I am making rider sets that are higher up and back for more ground clearance.

those things being said, I would recommend the 180/55 for everyday use ESPECIALLY bagged and 2-up...

if you do the 190/55/17-120/70/17 you'll notice the difference immediately if you truly are getting down there...
- EXAMPLE - I'm pulling my pegs on both sides(squishing my feet) and my shifter lever and rear brake lever are all getting ground down in the corners since they
are all in line with each other... be careful what changes you make they may just bite you in the ass imagine a lowside at speed... CAUTION

I'm also running a carbon hugger so the stock guard is gone
