Goldwing 1800 is faster than my VFR 1200

This past Sunday ride in Korea (speed cam takes photos of front license plate, which doesn't play in part with motorcycles) For about 20 minutes I would leave him like standing still reaching 136MPH and barley see him in my side mirrors. Once we saw cars(many automobiles) he would split lanes doing 90 mph and I wasn't willing to take the risk and he blew past me. Be careful out there and live to ride another day .

90mph lane splitting...on a Goldie!! Live to ride another day indeed...

Well he does have 50% bigger engine in displacement--that is a huge difference.

..and an airbag...

so its not that he is faster than you, just plain stupid.

Sounds like definetly a "Gold Wing Death Wish"....."but"..... havin' owned (...and ridden many more) both 2-wheel, and 3-wheel versions of the Gold Wing 1800, I can tell You for a fact that They are very potent Performers. After adding a SUPER BRACE, Progressive Technologies Springs, and pullin' the Fork Tubes up through the Trees 1/4", my last 2008 2-wheeler flicked like a Sport Bike.......

Heh.....I understand, and Yes, I get to ride "The Dragon" on a pretty regular basis...sometimes to be doin' it, sometimes as a way to get Somewhere else.... :fing02: ......been ridin' it since Fall 1971....... :laughing6-hehe:

I would love to spend some time on a Goldie - just to see what they are like. Owners seem to be a real loyal bunch.

Yep, the 'Wing is a Great "Do-All-Machine", but I just can't ever get my brain wrapped around "Lane Splitting"....must be because of bein' from Tennessee, drivin' with our (cough) drivers daily, or "BOTH".........got a feeling the Wing would be constantly takin' off a lota' rusty, non-insured 20 year old doors on a weekly basis...... :laughing6-hehe:

I don't do it very often but when the Interstate is going nowhere or hardly moving it is handy. I am actually more worried about being rear ended.

Pretty cool the way some folks move over too which gives you some more room. But there are others of course that do the opposite :pissed:

I think I have about 40K total but this year has been tough for riding despite my long tours to Texas (Wing) and Alaska (KLR). THis is the first year I have have not been to the Sierras on the Wing and or VFR.

A huge difference that is irrelevant. The Wing has 20 less horsepower and at least 200 pounds heavier.
An 1800 Wing is nowhere near as fast as a VFR1200, or a VFR800 for that matter.

The title of the thread should have been Goldwing rider faster than VFR1200 rider

My husband and I did some scaring of the road sheep while roaring through Utah and the Sedona area last year.. the average driver is not prepared to see Wings in the full-lean mode on a mountain pass. :laughing6-hehe:

I would never try to lane split faster than about 35.

I rode a GoldWing for years before downsizing to a VFR. I have not ridden a 1200 VFR so allI can say is that if you can ride a GoldWing well enough to grab some knee and drag some parts, then lane splitting is not a problem. I used to do the same things on my ole 83 GoldWing that I do on my VFR or R1. Lane splitting on a GoldWIng is a lot of work, one thing for sure is people see and hear you a lot better and when they see that big bike coming they move lol. A GoldWing is more fun then some people realize. The 1800 GoldWings are kinda sporty for a big overweight pimped out crusier. I have done lane splitting on a Valkyrie and dusted many sportbike riders - so what - got dusted a few times myself. The Valkyrie handles even better than a GoldWing and you can lean that bike all the way down too. Some people will play it safer than others which is not a bad thing. - Do your thing, do what you want to do and enjoy yourself - why worry about what someone else is doing??? I never care what anyone else does because I ride my ride.

Having ridden a VFR1200....Yes, the 1200 is a lot faster......having owned VFR800s, one while I owned my 2008 Gold Wing 1800, not as much difference in the two, and depending on the road, the Gold Wing can hold it's own pretty well......

Anybody remember this guy,,,, Some one posted that here awhile back. Insane.

The problem is with the road sheep, and you must interact with them on their terms. Please be careful. Anything above around 35, and they are all fixated to the front.

My father has one and I've ridden it several times... honestly, it's a great bike but certainly not for me at this point in my life. If I'm ever ready to slow down and "cruise" or do alot of slabbing for whatever reason a GW could be in the works, otherwise I'll have my sport / sport-touring bikes anytime please. The beauty is that we have so many wonderful choices.

As far as a GW being faster then a VFR1200F... I've never ridden the new VFR, but that's just plain not happening.

Well, yeah, the VFR is much faster than the wing by vertue of its small size and weight. The wing is more suited to those marithon coast-to-coast cruises, but isn't above some canyon storming along the way.

They were both built for different purposes.

And when I'm at work, my husband goes out for rides on the VFR all week while his Wing sits in the garage. :happy:
