Painting/color question

Well, I have a patient who owns an auto body shop, and he also paints motorcycles (he rides too). We worked out a trade deal and I have about $1,800 in credit with him. When I was learning to ride my new to me 2004 VFR I had about three or four drops on sidehills when parking or getting it off the centerstand. I'm only 5'7" 160 lbs and had only ridden a standard and cruisers previously, so there was a learning curve for me. Anyway, I rashed up the plastics a bit, but not so noticeable since the black "asphalt" color hides the dings and scratches so well. Now that I have them means, and am less likely to drop so often, I would like to get her painted. So here's the question...stick with the black "asphalt" or change to something else? I like the black, but it's an opportunity to do something different. What do you think?

It looks kind of gray in this photo, but it's the 2004 factory "Asphalt" color which is basically a pseudo-flat/metallic charcoal black.

As an FYI, changing the tank color would neccessitate removing quite a bit of Stomp-grip from the tank. 3M adhesive...ugh!

I say keep it as is. That color is rare and is damn sexy. If you're looking for a change, find some rashed up body work and a spare tank, fix them up (which isn't too difficult-or have the guy do it for you), and have those painted. The plus side is you can sell them if you want to go back to flat black.

Fix what you have.

Two votes for keeping the black. Make that three...I like the color. Even though it's not the Honda red :biggrin: .

I vote for gloss black. It looks damn good on the VFR. Tell him to tint the clear with a bit of black for a ten-mile-deep effect that will have you drooling.


ps - $1800 should get you two paint jobs, especially if you only have scratches!

All the :computer-noworky: on the VFR websites about how the U.S. doesn't get some of the great colors the rest of the world does, and you want flat black ?

I was hoping you would chime in...thanks for the suggestion. My ST1300 is gloss black and it's going to need that second paint job you mentioned. I'll think about putting the viffer to glossy...

I like yours in white! That would require painting EVERYTHING though... Besides, it's really not flat black. It has a metallic depth to it that's hard to describe. It just doesn't seem to show every little defect like gloss black or other dark colors.

I vote for a wow or at least a wow for you. If you are going to paint the plastics and go thru all the work then pic or design something personal.
Just dont forget to paint the solo seat cover and the 2 small covers for the viking horns.

I have been considering the idea of doing mine in flat black with gloss finish honda wings (like the rr's have) and gloss custom emblems/lettering. :fing02:

Probably change my mind after I mock it up in photoshop, but right now at least it looks good in my head! And it makes it match up nice with the cheaper matte finish hard bags! :beer:

You know my answer, but in an attempt to really help, I have 2 suggestions:

1 flat black with glass black number pannels
or
2 black on one side and another colour on the other ala the HD racer:

I went with a custom red and black combo. Not shown here is a vinyl silver line separating the two colors which it does now (and yes, the right panel was the original color and has been painted since). That whole job ran me $1200 so $1800 should get you a really nice paint job. I say do something custom that YOU like. But that's just me. :biggrin:

Man, I thought this was going to be easy...I should have know you guys would come up with some great suggestions. Hell, even Tim came up with something awesome (other than flat black that is...sorry Timmy). Vanion2, that is a very sweet paint job...looks as Seb said "deep".

I've always loved pearl white. But then if you're going to repaint it, I would want something distinctive and the 6th gen comes in white. A nice two tone does look real nice and classy. Or if you want it in glossy black, have him add a little red, blue or other color of pearl to really make it pop in the sunlight.
Burnt orange is a beautiful color.
Look at the Triumph Sprint in blue, that's a realy cool color also. One that you never really see on a bike...
I say if you have a 1800 credit, make it worth it. If you're having him just fix the black and paint it the same color that is nowhere near 1800 worth of work.

Make him earn it. :biggrin:

Not a bad idea Timmy. Two colors spilt by a stripe. That would keep people guessing.

Thanks Seb. Stopped by the body shop today...he said he can do whatever I want. He's a harley guy and I don't think he likes the race replicas as much as I do... :blush:

I just learned how important the paint is!

I have always thought the 1000f Interceptors were really ugly. I didnt like the shape at all...THEN I saw this monochrome red one and although I really dont like that colour too much, I LOVE the shape of this one. The paint and the application really transformed this bike.

In December i'm crashed too and i paint the bike again with same Black.
I don't think to re-sell the bike but with the stock color worth much than a non-stock.
I think too to do something different, but i ve bought on eBay cheap used parts to paint different, so i have two "dress" and in any moment i can turn back to the stock color.

He has two bikes and could get both painted for the money bartered or get a secong set of plastics/tank to have two completely different looking bikes with minimal change over time.

I think a tastefully done custom paint job does not detract from the bikes value but stock paint is generally a better indicator of rashed plastic or tip overs...

I speak about value because in Italy things goes in this way.
A used bike with stock colors are surely sold before than a personalized coloring, but in USA things maybe be different.

Now i have the plastic part to the finisher for repaint. My stock color is Black Mute Metallic and i ask to have it a same perfect one.
Two or three weeks of work and i will see the result.
