Looking for any advice on removing the fuel pump from my 2003 VFR. I have the tank off the bike, just wondering if there is a trick to getting the pump out of the tank. I took the bolts off the plate but it doesn't seem like it wants to come out too easily.
Yeah, that's all there is. It takes a lot of wiggling around to find it's way out. There's a filter and a scrub pad looking pre filter surrounded in rubber and the pump that all has to squeeze through at just the right angle...
Totally agree. It's just a tight fit and needs a lot of wiggling! You will initially think you're damaging it because the rubber makes the fit so tight, but give the rubber a squeeze as you wiggle the pump and it will eventually pop out.
I seem to recall once I had done that, getting it back in didn't feel hard - maybe I was just confident by then.
I used some popcycle sticks to help help the steel wool stuff and the rubber not catch on the sharp lip of the cutout in the tank, as said above, it feels like you are hurting something, just make sure to check the tank for loose pieces of that steel wool stuff before buttoning it back up, I was surprised to find several small pieces after my removal. They should never make it through the filter into the pump, but I didn't want to leave them in there.
Alright, pump is out. Anybody ever polish the filler cap assembly while they have it out? Just curious. Thanks for all the tips. The real trick is always putting the pieces back together the right way. :ohmy:

Yeah, I tried polishing my filler cap once. Came out not great, so I painted it black. I also had a polished top triple clamp and found it was kinda annoying when the sun was in the wrong angle. Bright! :cool: So I've decided the shiny things won't be in my line of sight in the future. :idea3:

Is that cap aluminum? Was it not taking a shine very well? Just curious. You might be saving my fingers a whole lotta work. :fing02:
Glad you got the pump out!
Hope you didn't pry it out as the lip of the tank is very soft and will easily bend and this will cause the seal to fail and fuel to leak everywhere.
Be careful removing and re-installing it. :blush:

I think it was because I wasn't able to get it apart, and I'm lazy... lol
