The oil formerly known as MX4T. I'm looking to buy some for my spring oil change. The best price I can find locally is at Wally World: $13.27 CAD a litre. For comparison to prices south of the line, a litre is a tad larger than a US quart (1.057 US quart), and the Loonie (Canadian dollar coin) is trading today at $1.025 USD. (Don't feel too badly American readers, I remember travelling in the US in the early 2000s when the Canadian dollar was worth 64 cents USD--ouch!).
In any case, does anyone have a line on lower prices? I have seen a few online offers for a case of six quarts for $50, but when you add shipping of $25 it's not worth the trouble. Can you buy this stuff in bulk anywhere?
#2
My local Mobil One retailer has it for $9.90 a quart.. I had a coupon so I paid $50.00 for six quarts.
#3
Walmart $8.97 US per quart
#4
Man is that stuff expensive.
#5
Over $11.00 a quart at my local MC dealer. I've got to find something less expensive.
#6
I have been using Mobil 1 Racing 4T on the St1300 for the last two changes (8k) and have not noticed the difference from the Rotella T I had been using, so from now on the VFR and ST1300 will be getting Rotella T.
#7
Euro 14 a litre, so approx $17.50 a quart
#8
Can't help you much on pricing or finding it cheaper, but I can tell you it's definitely cheaper at Wal-Mart than at bike shops or even auto parts shops (few of whom stock it on the shelves).

I think the last time I bought it, the cost was $8 or $9 USD per quart at Wally World. But like auto parts shops, not all Wal-Marts normally stock the stuff.

You could try your local ESSO Bulk Fuel wholesaler. Now that EXXON and MOBIL are one entity, the ESSO bulk stations carry Mobil products.

BUT, they probably don't have it in stock, AND if they ordered it in, they would likely want you to buy the entire case (12 litres)

OR, you could just use the 15w50 NON-energy conserving auto oil:

Look at Canadian TIre for the 4.4 litre jugs when they come on sale.

The 1L bottles are reg price 10.49 ea, and I have seen the 4.4L jugs on sale for $35 or $7.95/L equivalent.

Hey I am not trying to be a know it all or start an argument, but as far as I am aware of 10-40 oil is not for a bike. I do not mean to sound like a know it all but 10-40 oil is rated for a car. The Mobil Delvac 1 esp 5w-40 is for a motorcycle. The shell Rotella is also good oil but I understand you should go with what you like - no arguments here and no insult to you. Please advise me if I am misinformed. Thanks!!!!!

Honda Specs thru 2005 called for 10-40 on the ST1300, after 2005 they changed to 10-30. None call for 5 weight but the rotella T is 5-40 and is MA approved.
But I agree.... lets not start an oil thread  :beatdeadhorse:
I should open the book on the VFR and see how it differs from my other V4. Amsoil anyone ? lol

I used to use Mobil 1 until I got tired of the $9-10 a qt. price. Now I'm another Rotella T convert! Works great in the VFR, ST1300, 650R, Vulcan 900, etc. Buy it in the big gallon jugs at WalMart.

Mobil 1 Racing 4T 10W-40 is recommended for four-cycle motorcycles which specify the use of a 10W-40 engine oil. It provides excellent performance in motorcycle engines that are designed with a common engine/transmission lubrication system or where the engine lubrication system is separate from the transmission system.

Mobil Delvac 1 ESP 5W-40 is recommended for use in a wide range of heavy-duty applications and operating environments found in the on-road transport and off-road mining, construction, and agricultural industries. Mobil Delvac 1 ESP also meets the API SM specification for gasoline engines used in mixed fleets.

Kawasaki recommends 10W-40 in many of their bikes as well...

Oh, and for anyone wondering:

Quote

-Why did you change the name of Mobil 1 MX4T 10W-40 to Mobil 1 Racing 4T 10W-40? Is the product formulation different?

-Mobil 1 MX4T 10W-40 was renamed because the product is known as Mobil 1 Racing 4T 10W-40 outside the US. Be assured that no changes to the Mobil 1 MX4T 10W-40 formulation occurred during this name change. Same great product, new name.

Oooohhh.... another oil thread!
Well, I myself use Mobil's synthetic $T Motorcycle oil on my VFR.
I have tried all sorts of fancy synthetic oils through the years on the bike like Agip, Motul, Spectro and Castrol, but I do have to say the bike shifted the best with the Mobil synthetic when I switched to it two years ago. Yes, I know I'm most likely just wasting my money on all this fancy synthetic brands.....but it's only money and mine to spend..... :491:

go behind a restaurant with a bucket, scoop up the old french fry grease...put it in a pot on your stove and melt it down. Take screen off of window to use as a filter, filter melted hot oil from stove back into bucket. Measure oil out and do an oil change. Your VFR will run better than ever and your exhaust will smell like onion rings and jalepeno poppers. :fing02:

The manual for my '06 has a section titled Oil Recommendation (p. 105). It says SG or higher API classification (not energy conserving), viscosity (weight): SAE 10W-40, and JASO T 903 standard: MA. So, Honda says 10W-40. My understanding of these things (also no oil expert) is that viscosity ranges that are close (such as 10W-30) or that encompass the recommendation (such as 5W-50) will also work with no ill effects. My other bike (a Suzuki) also has 10W-40 as the recommended viscosity.

While I don't want to start an oil thread and get banned by HS Posted Image I've been thinking about trying the Rotella too. It's more readily available and the synthetic goes for about $9.50 a litre locally. Still expensive, but better than $13. It also goes on sale from time to time.

I agree completely and for all the same reasons! Posted Image
I drained some well-worn MX4T out of my VFR last summer and replaced it with one spare litre of MX4T and 2+ litres of Castrol Grand Prix four stroke motorcycle 10W-40 which I had on hand since I use it in my other bike. It's not synthetic, but in the DR650 it works well, shifting is smooth, engine temps are normal (air cooled single), and it's less than half the price of synthetics. I also change non-synthetic oil frequently, so I figured I'd give it a try in the VFR. In the viffer, however, I noticed immediately that the gear box was noisier. Shifting also seems notchier, but that might be my imagination Posted Image I did use Mobil 1 "red cap" synthetic in the DR650 and preferred it to the Castrol, but Mobil changed the formulation and it's no longer available. (There seems to be an unresolved debate on the interweb as to which blend replaced "red cap" or is closest to it.) I also like to use synthetic before tours since, from what I've read, it doesn't break down as quickly as non-synthetic oil.

How does the bike shift with the Rotella? If I can't find the Mobil 1 at a better price I may go this route. Posted Image

I really do not have a problem with the price of Mobil One Racing 4T. Going to a cheaper synthetic might save between six or eight bucks an oil change.

I used to use the Mobil 4T. It worked, like it should, and it did 'feel' better than the previous oil I was using. Decided to try the Honda dyno oil, since it was $19 for a jug. Shifting doesn't feel as good, but it's only noticeable when I don't preload, and it's not all that noticeable of a change.

As for price, I was paying $40ish and oil change using that stuff. Honda has some synthetic stuff too I might try later down the road, as that comes in bulk, and isn't a whole lot more expensive.

Someone said they get Mobil 1 4T at Wal-Mart. Not where I live; they only carry the regular Mobil 1 (not 4T). PEP Boys, and other outlets around here also do not carry the 4T. Only place I can get it is at my local cycle dealer and it's pricey.

Shifts fine, As I don't want to get to much into an oil thread my personal take is... if you change your oil every 3-4 thousand miles use Dino and save your money. I run my 8 so I use synthetic. And yes around 6k the shifting begins to get chunky with any oil I have ever used.
I am strongly considering getting more oil changing therapy and going back to dino and just change it more often. I can't remember the last bike I overheated.
