see my rack

Just installed a ventura rack i got of ebay for 100 bucks, looks brand new, add said it was only used once or twice then sold bike.

then spent a hour cleaning the bike, Maguires wash and wax, degreeser, maguires acid free wheel cleaner, white wheels, what can i say, then about to put this maguires motorcycle fairing wax wet look on it,

All waxed with maguires motorcycle wet look fairing wax, maguires non acid wheel cleaner, and maguires wash and wax ph nuteral stuff..

I've got the same rack on both my VFR and "Busa--I love it. When not using the large luggage, I use the posrt rack. Great for a small tail bag.

That color scheme looks mucho better.

Not sure if you've had the problem of the set screws coming loose, but I ended up drilling out the set screw point so the screw could go through the rack section, and not just push on it.

Great looking bike. Have you tried the Maguires products for cleaning? :goofy:


Yoshi, If you look at pic 47 (or pic number 5 if you count down from the top) you can see the locking nut around the set screw. The "tool" that comes with the kit allows you to tighten the set screw and then lock that nut down.

I have had zero problems with the bolts backing out while aggressively riding.

Storm, when riding solo, I strap my bag over the seat and around the front bar on the rack and can then bungee something else on the rack platform. Works great.

Same same - and I reckon it generally puts the heavier luggage weight in a better (more neutral) position on the bike!

I knew that I'd be in for a dissapointment if I opened this thread. But then this is a bike forum... :goofy:

Why not go with a top box though?
I'm sure that it's functional an'all, but to me it looks like a sissy bar from a chopper grafted to a sport bike - A bit out out place on such a beautifl machine such as yours.

several davantages to this setup:

• weight
  
• location (when using just 1 bag, I usually have the rack turned around so that the bag faces forward, and the rack portion is positioned over the rear seat cowl - this puts the weight farther forward.
  
• ease of removal. 2 bolts to remove rack
  
• you can replace the rack with a grab bar. ($15 from Ventura)

Just saying. I've had a problem with mine, and ended up having the rack fall off 2 miles from home, and losing most of my gear. I had the second locking screw too...

But yeah, the rack is nice. Pretty cheap second hand too. Bought one for the 4th and 5th gen and liked it. It was nicer to strap a pelican case to the rack than to the seat.

You didn't ask me but I'll answer anyway :happy: ... ventura systems are generally far cheaper than top boxes. Plus, since ventura is a kiwi product it's quite normal to see 'em on sports and sports-touring bikes all over Oz.

I guess it's whatcha get used to seeing so it doesn't look odd to me at all.

Another reason I like it is that I can use the stuff on any of my bikes.

I have the only 1198ST in the US right now because of this:-) (1198 Sport Touring edition)

Plus it is nice to have the only rack & bagster combo at the track while I am passing all the race bike guys:-)

There might be a dialect issue here too, likely 'rack' doesn't have the same connotation in Oz.
Great looking bike though, but I'm also with Rice--I try to keep the weight low. A friend of mine whom I rarely ride with has some flavour of enormous Yamaha Star, with beach bars and a large sissy bar to which he straps all sorts of giant bags. He's a big lad (6'3", 240 lbs.), so he can handle the bike, but the whole thing looks sort of improbable to me--like a wide-bodied jumbo jet on the runway (those things shouldn't be able to fly!) yes throught id try these maguires products, only coz somebody suggested i get the wheel cleaner lol.


as for the rack well its cheap i got it near new for 100 bucks, were as a top box, will be 500+..

yeah, as u can see my other bikes have ventura racks too, usually turn them around when solo, but i dono with a seat cowl lol..

My Ventura has served me well when used with my trunk. I tighten the set screws with pliers and then "speed wire" it with a piece of electrical tape wrapped around the set screw AND the rack giving an extra measure against it loosening and backing out. The black tape disappears into the rack visually and you really have to be looking to spot it against the black frame.

I hate it. I hate those ventura racks! well, since you asked. but....
the paintwork, wheels is extremely nice, your bike looks way cool in that paint scheme (well, minus the rack)

well id like to get a set of matching hard panniers, but i cant afford it just yet..

Question: I got one of these racks given to me and want to
put my top hard case on it so that it puts it further back so I can put a passenger on without having to take the top case off. Not sure how to secure it to the Ventura rack. You can see in my pic below how my current rack (fabbed by previous owner) covers up the passeger seat. Its great for riding solo and giving my a back rest, but my son, 6, is always wanting to ride around the neighborhood with me and its a pain to keep taking off and putting on the top case.

I have one. Two actually and they work very well with my top box.
I don't carry passengers, but I wanted to be able to open the seat w/o removing the box and rack.

I have the same setup, except I went with the sport rack instaed of the tall version. I have adapted it to accept my Givi top box. Very slick setup. Just a tip though. The rack is supposed to mount under your grab rails so that they can still be used unobstructed by a passenger. I will post a pic in a bit of my set-up.

the rack goes under teh grab rails, really, seemed to fit quight nicley the way it is their, might have another go at it then.

Is that the M5 or the M5M? BTW, my Ventura doesn't have the big tall bar. Mine is MUCH shorter.

doesnt fit under the rails at all, so the way i got it is right,

thought id try take it all off, and putting the plugs in 4 bolts, fairly simple,
