Hello, I introduce myself: My name is Felipe and I'm new in this forum. I have a VFR 400 NC30, but with a wrecked engine.
I want to change the engine but I don't know if it's possible to mount a different engine from my bike. I have this idea because in my country (Chile) there aren't the neccesary spare parts for this model.
Does anyone know if I can put any engin from another VFR model? I need to know if this is possible. Well, I'd like to remark that I want to buy a most common engine in the world than the nc30. Maybe an engine from a RC30, RC36, RC45 or RC46.
Well I hope you can help me or just give an advise.
Thank you very much!.
Regards!.
Felipe.
Hola Felipe,
No pronlem with your English, I understood everything. In fact, your English is very good. I'm sorry I'm not competent enough to help but people with greater knowledge will chime in I'm sure.
Hood luck!

There are a few engine swaps I've heard of with an NC30, one being an VFR750 RC36, a few people have put RG500 motors in them apparently, and a guy in California was trying to stuff an SV650 engine in one. If I had a spare NC30 frame laying around, I'd probably try the RC36 swap, though it looks like a lot of work! Here's a link to the guy with the 750 motor in his NC.
BTW, what happened with your engine? These things rarely come apart from what I've heard, unless they're abused or jetted incorrectly. I've heard that some have issues with jumping out of 2nd gear, which an engine replacement is probably the most cost effective repair. I'm an NC30 owner as well, and living in Southern California means I'm nearly in the same boat as you in regards to buying or acquiring parts, since they never sold them here either!
Thanks for your answers!.
Polar Bear, I'm glad you uderstood everything hahaha.
Kostritzer, thanks for the information, it's very useful for me. Talking about your question, the engine wrecked like a month ago, when I was at the highway going to my house after work. I disassembled the engine and saw that the conecting rod of the cylinder #4 was broken, the problem is that the rod damaged another components of the engine like the crankshaft, the cylinder and the oil pump. I've analized the situation and resolved that for me it's maybe, a little bit more expensive to change the engine for another engine, but doing this I gain an engine with more OEM spare parts, more HP, torque and less mileage.
Well, any more sugestions or advisements will be welcome.
Thanks again, and I hope to see my bike on the roads again.
Greetings.
Felipe.
Sounds like maybe an oil restriction problem, or maybe an ex-race engine that was on its way out? Used 400 engines pop up all the time on ebay UK, and yahoo auctions Japan. They're usually not too expensive, but the shipping to Chile would probably be!
Supposedly the RC46 engine is slightly narrower than the RC36 engine, so it may be a better fit, but then you have to do something about the swingarm pivot thats built into the motor. Either motor will make this little bike into a rocket, but its possible that the handling will suffer in exchange.
Hello Felipe, I have an nc30 located in Cambodia, so parts availability is something I can relate to. Try www.rvf.dk/rickoliver/. I have sourced all the parts for my bike through him. He's extremely knowledgable and more than happy to share what he knows.
Two thoughts on international shipping - does Chile have import tariffs for motorcycle parts?. In Cambodia they charge 40% of the invoice amount so I have suppliers write an invoice for 20% of the actual cost. Many ebay sellers simply write "gift" on the package. My other thought is just that I have had the best luck with shipping parts from the uk. Via Con Dios Craig
Kostritzer I don't know why the engine had that fault. I think that it was just too much use and material fatigue, here in Chile 400 bikes are like a plague, and in most cases their owners are novice people in the world of the bikes. It's very difficult to buy a 400 bike in good condition, when I bought this bike I thought that I was purchased a good runing bike (I think I was wrong hahaha).
I'm thinking not to buy a NC30 engine, because the shipping costs would be the same (or very similiar) with another engine. That's why I'm thinking seriously in buy a RC46 engine, it has waaaay much spare parts, fuel injection, less mileage, in synthesis quite much reliable than another 400 engine.
One thing that makes me doubt it's what you said: maybe the bike's handling will change, NC30 it's around 40 kg lighter than the RC46.
Craig Chile have taxes when you buy things over US$ 300.- they charge a 20% over the invoice amount, but I hope I can avoid some shipping charges, because I'm an aviation mechanic, and I work in a big airline here in Chile. I'm almost sure that I have benefits related with the internment of anything I want to buy from abroad, only just one time for year. Tomorrow I'm going to find out if that benefit it's true or not.
Well I'll deeply analize the possibility of making this work on my bike.
Thanks to all for your help! and I hope you'll keep posting here, just to talk about this topic.
Felipe.
