Anyone figured out definitively exactly what signals are available on the DLC connector? Since GIPRO makes a DS gear position indicator that plugs into this port, I'm assuming that speed and RPM are somehow available on it. From the schematic, there's 4 pins and 2 are power and ground. The other two come from the ECU pins 19 and 30. These signals don't go anywhere else, they come straight off the ECU so they could be anything. Certainly possible to be a complex protocol based connection for the Honda diagnostic computer. Maybe it's just a tach and speedo signal. Seems unlikely that GIPRO would've reverse engineered a fancy Honda protocol. Thoughts?

[EDIT] after re-reading HealTech's GIPRO DS description, I think it's certainly possible that they are decoding a Honda ECU protocol. They state that the DS versions have minimal lag as a result.

I'd guess that they're using CAN bus to send the info around. They've been using it on their cars for a while, no real point inventing a new protocol when there's a convenient one laying around.

It would send RPM, throttle position, speed info, ABS info, temperature, barometric pressure, etc, from the various sensors to the ECU. Just a matter of picking out what you want.

I was thinking about building a decoder with a PIC to see what my truck is doing and came across some info sheets on their site. Here's one that gives a quick overview of CAN bus. It's a pretty neat protocol. Turns out they also sell a PC interface box that ends up being cheaper than I can do it for, too. The wonders of mass-production..

Is that the same thing as the newest protocol used for OBD2 for cars? Looking at CanOBD2.com, all vehicles since 2008 are to use the ISO 15765 CAN (Control Area Network) protocol. When implemented for OBD2, it is a differential signal requiring 2 pins. The DLC on our bikes has 2 pins coming from the ECU. I wonder...

I can't believe no one has hooked up a scope or something to see what's on that connector. What if it is CAN per the OBD2 spec? That would mean we could build a simple adapter and use a car-based OBD2 scanner on our bikes. That would be awesome.

[EDIT] I sent an email inquiry to HealTech (makers of the awesome Speedohealer and the new GIPRO DS GPI) asking about the DLC on our bikes. Here's there response:
"Thank you for your email. It's a proprietary Honda protocol. The GIpro DS for Honda calculates the gear position based on speed and rpm signals, but it's very quick and accurate."

So there you go... doesn't look like we can just build an adapter and jam the DLC signal into an OBD2 scanner. The folks at HealTech seem to be working on OBD gear now. They have software for Suzuki bikes but not Honda... yet.

Honda sell HRC programming software which can re-map compatible ECUs (generally their dirt bikes) and they connect via the 4-pin DLC port. Man woudln't it be nice to re-map a VFR without a Powercommander!

I sincerely doubt it's possible on our ECU though, and I'd suggest the value of any OBD tools will depend greatly on whether they can get more data out of the ECU than flashing the MIL light can.

Hi to all,

does anybody know if it's possible to make a DLC conector also on '02-'05 VFRs by wiring up the ECU's A30 & B19? The other two should be easy since the '02-'05 models are already using the same signal wires: A4-bl/wt (for Pair Valve, injectors, some relays a.s.o.) & B4-green (ground). Are any hardware changes between '02-'05 and '06 onwards ECUs?
Question comes due to my wish to install a Gipro DS gear indicator and for personal knowledge purpose.
