Just turned 16k mikes and the bike is due for a valve adjustment. The local shop quoted 7 hours @ $69 a hour.
Do do a valve adjustment take 7 hours ? What would be a reasonable estimate ?

I'm assuming you have a 6Gen since you don't show it anywhere(I'm going by the price). On the 6Gen it actually needs to be gone though 2 times to get the end result of the valves being adjusted. hince the cost.
Don't waste the money!!!!!!!!!!! Run it at least another 16-20k before you even start to think about checking them and IMO you could easily go over 50k never checking them or causing any problems. :fing02:
You don't have to us me as an example, but I've beat the holy crap our of my 02 for more than 85,000 miles and have NEVER checked them. :biggrin: I know several others with more miles and no checks or issues either.
Like I said you don't have to use my numbers, but you can no doubt easily go over 30/40/50k miles w/o checking them. Even if you had one out of spec it would take a hugely abnormal amount of wear to ever cause a issue.

personally i think people telling people to not do it until 50k is stupid. I would do the first one and then consider waiting awhile for the second.every bike is different it could be out or not.
I did both of mine. the first one took all day the second was about 5 hours. Though I go through and do a full fluid change and such while im at it.

Wasting money is not wise and the opinion that if you Don't have your Vtec's valves checked by 16k that you will cause damage to your engine is BS. My point is that it is NOT an emergency or even a slightest worry that any Vtec owner Must have their valves checked by 16k miles or anywhere near that mileage. I offer up the 10 years of data from the dozens, hundreds or even thousands of members who have gone past the 16k miles valve check by any mileage amount and have Not suffered any engine damage whatsoever. Let alone members like myself who have gone over 5 TIMES the recommended mileage check w/o performing a valve check w/o no visible negative effect on their engines.
I only ask you to provide ONE example of damage to a Vtec from Not doing the 16k valve check at any mileage number to back up your *#!#**#!**@*#... opinion! :laughing6-hehe:
Again I'm not suggesting you never check them( like me), just that the 16k check could easily go twice that mileage w/o issue. How far you care to go is up to you. If money is not and issue by all means take it to your nearest Dealer. :fing02: BR
PS Yes the Shop hours are up there on a Vtec valve check at the Dealer because you have at least Twice the labor involved in check Vtec valves vs none vtec VFR's

Were your's out of spec enough to need readjusting?
7 hours is probably not too far off. I'd definitely talk to the shop and verify that they have checked several VTEC's and are comfortable doing it. You could pull most of the plastics/tank off yourself and trailer it in to avoid potential damage by the dealer plus cut down on service time. I personally wouldn't check them any sooner than 20K-25K.
In a nutshell:
Order slide pin stoppers
Pull the seat
Pull the tank
Pull the R/L Lowers
Pull the airbox
Pull the valve covers
Unbolt everything
Pull the cams out twice
Check clearances
Possible need for new gaskets
Buckets or shims in stock(If not, ordering could take a couple weeks)
Couple things that make it easier to check clearances:
Diito with BR --- I checked my 4th gen at 22k and everything was in spec. The hardest part of the job is just stripping it down so you can get at what you need to get at, and thats the time for a shop. I have seen multiple threads of people with all the 4th, 5th, 6th gen VFRs saying their valves checked in spec at at range of 16k to 25k. So with my 5th gen, when the clock approaches over 40k, I'll begin to consider the job.
