1983 vf750f new paint.

Hey guys

I am new to this forum and I need some advice on painting. I have a 1983 honda interceptor vf750f and it needs a new paint job. Currently it has the blue and white with blue stripes but i am going to paint it with the 1984 blue and white with the red stripe. since I am new and poor though I need some help to get started.

1. What brand of paint should I use?
2. How much paint should I get?
3. What should I use to repair the cracks in the plastic?
4. How should I fix the dent in my tank? (Im thinking of using bondo but I don't know if that will work)
5. Where can I get a full decal kit for cheap online?
6. Should I try to paint the stripes or just get the decals?
7. Should I use a clear coat at the end? If so what should I use?
8. How much will it cost to sandblast my exhaust pipes?
9. How should I fix those stupid grille like things on the front fairing?
10. And should I get my tank sandblasted?
11. Also how should I fix that horrible patch job on my exhaust pipes?

You have a lot of work ahead of you. I don't undertake bodywork myself, as I don't have the tools nor skills, but the exhaust, I can comment on.

Either find some used stockers that are in better shape, or adapt a pair of modern cans onto the bike with custom connector pipes.

I don't think anyone is making exhausts for that bike anymore.


Most modern exhaust cans are going to be 2" I.D. and the outlet of your collector box on both sides is probably going to be 1.5" or 1.75".

Thus, the first short piece of your midpipes is going to have to be some sort of stepup adaptor.

I'm not a painter either but ebay is a good place to start if you're looking for cheap used parts. Otherwise, any decent muffler shop should be able to fabricate an adapter and mount a new/newer style moto-muffler for you fairly cheaply. As far as new colors go, it sounds like you might be after the color scheme on my first motorcycle. Good luck!

I ordered the paint. it is going to be painted with PPG porsche blue and white. of course its not actually porsche its just the paint name. The total cost with discounts came to $30 for a pint of the white and .5 pint of blue.

Are you following the original striping scheme?

I will be going with the stock paint scheme but I will be going with the 1984 white and blue with the red stripe.also in the end with the hardeners, reducers, sand paper, fiberglass repair kit, and bondo the total cost came to $250 a bit more than $30. I will post my progress later.

My sentiments exactly.

So I have the pint of white, the pint of blue, the slow reducer, and the hardener but i don't know what the mixture ratio is. can some one tell me what it is.

Finally a bit of progress. I finished my paint booth in my garage. also I striped my gas tank with aircraft paint remover. The reason there are lighter spots is because my friend started to sandblast my tank when the sandblaster broke. anyway the pictures speak for themselves.

Looks like a nice fresh place to start.

I am glad I dont need to do my tank. But im having a hell of a time finding good side panels. Keep up the work on yours I will be following along.

All I did today is sand and this is my progress. I have finished all of the fairings except for the front.

Yesterday and today I have been working on fiberglass repair and bondo. Also because of hondas stupid mesh support design on the front faring that always breaks I have replaced it with bondo.

No need to take all the paint of the plastic. 320 grit and/or a red scuff pad is good enough for primer adhesion - just make sure all the gloss is gone. Make sure you wipe all the exposed bare plastic with alcohol prior to primer.

I'll be doing this on my 83 soon enough.

I am insuring it tomorrow, you don't know how excited I am. plus I just bought a 92 toyota truck to top it all off.

Looks great! This does reinforce the advice I've heard to pay an expert. Your final product is outstanding but nine months?!? I know how much not riding hurts! There's no better feeling that doing the job yourself though.

If you don't mind me asking what was the total cost?

the total cost came to about $800! thats including having to buy lots of paint, clear, primer, tools, sandpaper and so on.

I paid $900 to have someone else do it for me.

I just got back from my first ride on the bike, and it was amazing, one of the most satisfying rides I have ever done.
