Desperately need better fuel economy

Hi all,

Have just installed PC3 on my European VFR800-VTEC A5 (2005) bike. I commute about 70 miles every day on a mix of motorway and city cruising.

I am currently experimenting with different maps - have tried Cosey's map which made the bike a completely different experience to ride. So responsive and agile - amazing!

I am now running on the standard 111-501 map provided with the PC3:

European model, all stock bike with Dynojet 02 sensor eliminator kit and stock or aftermarket air filter

This map still transforms the bike significantly, but is also quite thirsty on fuel.

I appreciate that PowerCommander is principally for performance improvements (so surprise surprise fuel consumption suffer). I mean just by adding a K&N filter one has to expect higher fuel consumption and with the O2 sensors and a much richer map especially around the wonderful VTEC 6,800 rpm point this obviously has its price.

However, with the added ability to control the balance of fuel and air I am curious as to whether I can get the best of both worlds - the smoothness in throttling and responsiveness from PC3 and improved fuel economy by adjusting how the bike runs lean/rich for optimised fuel economy when cruising etc. I have read somewhere that a 6% improvement is possible and with the ~1,500 miles per month I do every month that would pay for the PC3 over time.

I have O2 eliminators installed and a K&N filter, stock exhaust and everything else standard.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a map or thoughts on how to improve fuel economy?

Sounds like you will just need to experiment with different settings. If you save your current map on your computer you can tinker a bit and always have what you started with to fall back on.

Cozye's map is about as good as it gets though. That is what I have been running for years and it works well. Only issue I have noticed is at higher elevations such as riding in the mountains where the oxygen is thinner, the VTEC engagement point is a bit rough. But I think it was that way with stock fueling.
