Suggestions on mods

One of the first things I'll be doing is repairing/covering the minor scratches on right fairing using wrap, decals or painting.

I'l be removing the back pegs and mud guard to give the back end a better look. As well, I'm considering painting the muffler heat shields flat black. I'm not thrilled about those Honda wings on the back either, so they might be going. Also, thinking about removing the center stand because I understand it can scrap when cornering. There's a muffler mod I might be doing as well and possibly lower her a little. Should get some frame sliders as well although I hate the idea of cutting the fairings.

Anyone else have other suggestions?

Regarding the center stand removal, there is a down side. When my kickstand wore out while 1200 miles from home the center stand saved my butt. Before that, one of the two sidestand bolts fell out, also while on a long distance trip, and the sidestand would not keep the bike upright enough for my comfort. And it makes lubeing the chain much easier. And removing the rear wheel. I'd suggest against it at least until you find it does indeed limit you lean angle.
#3
To me it's Not worth removing the center stand! it weighs around 2lbs and is worth it's weight in gold to perform maintenance on the bike.  Even if you have stands at home not having  a center stand makes even lubing the chain a PIA on road trips.
Now if your talking track days then I would pop it off!

Good points on the center stand.

As for removing the wing handles on the back, does anyone know where to get fillers/grommets. I'd like to cover up the holes when the handles are removed.

They come with the bike new(suppose too) but you can buy(order) them from the Dealer. They are less then $10 ea.

#1 Mod for VFRs.... Vfrness from Tightwad.  Takes care of almost all the electrical gremlins that plague our crappy Honda wiring harnesses.  After that it's open season.   :fing02:

I was also think about a new rear sprocket. How many teeth up would you guys suggest? I'm thinking 2 or 4...
#9
Rodney, whilst I appreciate we are all different and want different things from our bikes, I do find your list of desired mods a little strange. Why change the rear sprocket? You'll totally bugger-up the speedo unless you buy & fit a Speedo Healer, and for what, a marginal increase in acceleration? You must either live on a race track or you need a bigger bike. And why lower the suspension? If it doesn't handle well enough, that may be because it is a compromise bike not a sports bike, though it handles more than well enough for me in the real world (ie non-track).

Only my opinion m8, no desire to offend your choices. It is your bike after all.

Good points. I'm on the fence with some of these mods and the sprocket and lowering are two of them. I'm just throwing it out there for discussion.

Fair enough. How many miles has your bike done? Maybe it just needs new suspenders (shock & front springs/oil change)...made a huge difference to my old Fi when I did that. And after 24k, I'm very close to replacing the OEM shock on my Vtec.

Mud and muffler guards: I have added a picture of my bike that includes two of the mods you are considering. (Flat black muffler guards and a fender eliminator.) I purchased the bike with these modifications having already been done. I just thought you’d like to see them on a VFR even if mines red and yours is flat black. I now have the rear pegs removed but with the fender eliminator, it just looks weird to me so I'm going to put them back on.

Have fun modifying your bike and ride safe!

- Just ride it awhile and then see what bugs you to change. Quite a few guys (me too) do an upgrade on suspension, some do the heli bar route, some do a Power commander thing. --- So, what are you after? --

-- Electrics is a sore spot on the bike, its worth it to do a quick check with a voltmeter at the battery at idle and 5000 rpm to access charging system health. Lots of guys add a voltmeter on the bike to keep an eye on it.

MelloDude nailed it  .. Ride the VFR for a while ... nothing wrong with fr a rr sprokets ratios... somewhere in the design and development phase of the bike Mother Honda dialed in the right gearing combo for the fuel mapping to make the bikes overall performance thro all 6 gears spot on for The Regular Daily Rider or Tourer. Save bucks for real improvements like maybe a taller windscreen, and sooner or later new front and rear buns. If you plan on racing then ignore all my blabbering and just get some good gofast personal protective gear. My $0.02 worth. BTW  are you getting some kind of early summer there in the far east ???

Nice. I was going to ask you your process about prepping the heat shields and what type of paint you used. But alas, you didn't DIY. This is my next project.

When I bought my '01 in 2006 I thought higher bars and lower pegs would help make the machine more comfortable. And a few other farkles like an aftermarket exhaust. But I'd put all my money in the purchase of the bike. I was fairly broke. Eventually I became stronger and a better rider. Now, after experiencing a bike with higher bars and lower pegs, and an aftermarket muffler, I find I prefer stock all around. Except for a taller windscreen. So you may want to wait to see how you and the machine grow into each other.

All the recalls were done on my VFR as well and my new 30A fuse holder started to get a little crispy so I reinstalled mine.  No problems since.  There are posts here about several 2007 VFR's also suffering electrical gremlins of the same sort and they were supposed to have fixed all those issues on the 06+ bikes.  It's your call but for me it was a small price to pay for peace of mind.

And +1 to the voltmeter as well.  These bikes are easy to farkle so choose your path wisely.  Maybe some heated hand grips to get you started since you live in the great white north?  Get some ride time and then see what bugs you the most from there.   :lobby:

It's disappointing that Honda didn't resolve the electrical issue, even after the recall :/

I'm not sure about what he did, but I plan on sanding with 300 and 600 grit sandpaper and painting using matte black BBQ paint. Remove shields, sand well, clean, paint, recoat as needed, let dry for a few days and reinstall.

Sounds like a good plan. Have you tested the paint on a similar metal to see how it matches your bike? Just a suggestion. :) Looking forward to seeing the results.

Well, I tell you this. I decided to go for it and do the chrome piece on the exhaust that is near the right foot peg as a test. And holy crap I'm excited because it turned out extremely well. 10 min of prep and 4 coats black high temp engine paint. I'm waiting for that to fully cure before applying the high temp clear enamel. I really like the matte look but it leaves marks that can't be wiped off or polished.

I'm debating doing the entire exhaust system now. Flat matte black(NO clear enamel) for the exhaust. Flat black(clear enamel) for the heat shield and rear covers. I will post pictures of the entire process in a new thread by the end of next week.

I was thinking of doing them in red but finding a red that matches the bike might be a little tough. If its not spot it would drive me nuts.

Sweet! Pictures, pictures when its done. :)

If I were to do it all over again, I would have done all my modifications in reverse order. That is, I have found the most enjoyment from the ones I have done recently than the first few, with the exception of the exhaust which I did first and absolutely love.

So, in order, I would do the following:

Exhaust
Power commander
Gearing
Suspension
Tires (I run Dunlop Q2s)
Aesthetics

Let me save you some time and frustration:

IT WILL PEEL OFF.

One more suggestion:

Ceramic Coating.

OK, long story:

I had the top end apart on my Ford Ranger. Doing all the top end gaskets.

Decided to sandblast the exhaust manifolds in our cabinet at work. Got both manifolds right down to PERFECT virgin white metal on ALL surfaces everywhere.

Thoroughly degreased the shiny clean manifolds with non-residue parts cleaner, dried, and put on 3 uniform coats of extra special high temp exhaust paint as per instructions and let dry.

I was going on holiday on the bike, so they hung to dry for like 2 weeks.

Baked them in the oven upon my return according to instructions on the can, time and temp to the letter.

Installed the manifolds, and within a week, it had peeled off of 75% of the surfaces.

Had the exact same experience with pipes on my 1986 VFR750.

That's...interesting. I was just going to do from the cat back and the cans. I'll look into the ceramic coating though. For the time being I will just stick with the shields and see how well they hold up. I'm assuming they will since they don't get that hot. Thanks for the warning though.

800Canuk .... A question on the metal coating you did ... was there a primer involved between bare/clean metal and the final finish coats ??? Reason ... I had similar experience in commercial/institutional painting where seeming perfectly prepped metal was top coated per paint manufacturers spec ... resulting in premature failure. Turned out there needed to be a primer .... this may not be your occurance but there is a chemical reaction called "soponofication" (sp?) wherein certain paints altho' seemingly intened for bare app. actually need a pre- primer to separate that paint from the metal. Just a guess but yup.. frustrating when all seems to be done to spec. and things crap out.!!!
#30
As a side note from a 4th gen guy, I washed my bike tonight and noticed that Im getting past the wear bars on the rear and starting to see a hint of cords. HOLY CRAP! How did that happen so fast? I watch that stuff like a hawk, evidently a far sighted hawk... Not to worry. I have another rear in my garage that I can swap out tomorrow at work. The center stand will make it possible for me to ride to work, pull off the rear wheel and have my other tire mounted at a nearby shop while I work and then I can pop the new one on in the afternoon and ride home. It doesn't take me five minutes to remove/replace the rear with a center stand. Likewise, a flat out on the road can be handled just as easily.
#32
I painted my exhaust shields with rattle can flat black engine paint about 1000 miles ago. It is sticking just fine. I used primer as well

Know any decent fender eliminator/tail tidy kits?
#36
I removed the rear pegs, relocated pre-load adjustment under seat and I since filled holes with grommets/plugs:

Tail tidy mod completed :) I used the existing fender, used the metal part, but sanded and paint it.

Installed :) I Cut Green/Yellow wire to top brake light, wired in modulator, connected modulator ground.. easier than I expected.

So far I've did these mods...
- Tail Tidy LEDs installed
- Brake modulator installed
- Tail tidy using exiting hardware
- Removed front reflectors
- Removed rear pegs and used plugs to cover screw holes

Next up is to remove the grab bars, install yoke protector, install black levers, and install Power Commander V

Looks good, man. I'm going through a list of mods myself still. Waiting to order the HID kit from tightwad and that will be it for a while.

Anyone here shave the stock seat? Because I'm finding the bike a bit high and I don't want to lower it because of stand and handling issues.

I went ahead and shaved the seat, easier than I thought. I shaved about an inch from under the driver seat only. Took me about and hour and a half.

The only two mods Ive done, which are reliabilty mods, a 12 volt power port, and a fork seal protectors, Other than thatn the bike keeps me busy enough with chains and tires.

Check out http://www.skurccf.com, prices vary, but for my bike it was $20. Installation is as easy as peeling back off and sticking. The tricky part in lining it up, because once it's stuck, that's it.

Rodney, nice bike... looks oddly familiar to mine.... anyway I painted my heat shields and muffler tips flat black with engine enamel and so far no issues, just make sure its very dry between coats. also your fender mod looks good but the one i got off ebay places the plate much higher, right between the exhaust so you have to be directly behind me and driving pretty close to see the plate (not that im running from cops or anything.....) as for the center stand people tried to convince me that it would scrape, but i found that your going to scrape your toe way before the stand is even close to the ground! but still I hated the way it looked so i ditched it, but still kept it and temp. re install it for maintenance. the best mods I can suggest are the pair valve/flapper mod (http://johnny.chadda...el-mod-for-vfr/) its instantly made the bike 20x better and smoother and the snorkel mod sounds pretty awesome. good luck and heres a pic of mine for comparison (your paint looks way better since mine is plasti-dip, easy to peel off quick and change back to red.....because im indecisive.....not from running from cops or anything...)

Quick addition: take a look at the heat shield for the exhaust, the passenger pegs used to cover the top but since you removed them it just kind of ...ends. I ground mine down so it looks a little cleaner i also hit it with a wire brush to give it a matte finish, just a suggestion.

Anyone run Dynotest after PAIR valve and flapper mods to see the differences?

Firstly you can't do a dyno run if your doing it for a tune with PC with pair valve connected due to it stuffs up A/F readings. The flapper is only closed off throttle so really will have zero affect on dyno. So your answer is both those mods will have zero difference to a dyno run readings.

I'm pretty sure I read a post where someone dynoed after pair flapped mod and there was no change, but I will say it changed the feel of the bike more than any mod I've ever done... worth it considering its free

Friggin awesome man, and thanks for the mod info :)

BTW, Do you have a Power Commander? Because I just installed one :)

Ok you want mods, I just took some updated pics which will be again out dated when I fit the Seb hitech clear clutch window side case.

Mods list as follows: ohlins FGRT forks, fork axle sliders, 954 triple clamps (top clamp billet), RC51 front wheel (modified to suit CBR), CBR1000RR calipers, CBR1000RR galfer wave rotors, CBR1000RR cf guard, brembo master, rizoma master res, convertibars, braided brake lines front/rear, F4i rear master, Penske shock, Motad headers, leo evo, pc3, 02 eliminators, pair valve plates, APE manual cam chain adjusters, shorai battery, thurn smoked led blinkers/tail light, cf hugger, sargent seat, pazzo lever, billet oil cap, gear indicator, volt indicator, puig tint screen, bagster tank cover, billet fuel cap, billet pegs, hids, head light protectors, billet bar ends, garmin zumo 660 mount.

Yes before someone points it out the levers are different colors because Brembo only has black, maybe one day might change clutch to black, bike also needs a wash but at the moment only have time to ride not wash :-)

I think in reality the only mods left are a SC & single nut rear wheel conversion but even if both those would be nice can't justify the $$ on them as already overboard.

Those forks are worth more than some people's entire bikes.

They may be worth more than my entire quiver of VFRs (three at this point - bordering on irrational)

good job so far. let me see if i can think of any pointers.... look into ditching the evap canister, it will shed a few pounds and make oil changes much easier. ebc brake pads are awesome. find a 98/99 header and have it coated or fork out for an aftermarket. definitively get some slip ons, power commander and CUSTOM DYNO TUNE. i did a 1 down 520 conversion sprocket kit, and thats definitely the best bang for the buck. the bike feels like a rocket now. dont forget to bleed the brake lines. you wont realize how bad they were until you do it. a manual fan switch is a must if you live somewhere hot.

oh and speaking of 07 vfr's with electrical problems.... ive already been through a stator and two rr's. just do yourself a favor and get a compufire rr and voltage gauge. because with your electrical system, its not a matter of if its gonna fuck up, but when...

another free one i just did was lowering the front end 10mm. it made an amazing difference in steering quickness, and was very quick. might wanna give it a whirl.

This doesn't throw the geometry off? How much quicker is the steering, to quick?

From what I can tell there has been no drawback from the mod, some people estimated that 10mm might casue some high speed instability, but during my rides I havent felt anything. Im used to riding sport bikes so the quickness was not an issue, it made the bike feel like it was much lighter and easier to flick around. also changing lines during a turn is much easier as it should be...

My take on mods - top priority first:

1. New saddle! A pineapple is better than the slippery stocker!

2. Power commander and custom map to eliminate the fueling glitches. Tossed in an aftermarket fair filter as well. Mileage dropped, but ridability greatly improved!

3. Suspension. The stock set-up is pathetic. I bought an Ohlins shock and had the front resprung and revalved. If money is no object, you can go crazy with a fork replacement.

4. Speedohealer. I want to know exactly how fast I am going when the LEO has his radar gun on me.

5. Everything else (exhaust, brakes, wheels, levers, fender eliminator, snazzy decals, etc.) can wait because IMO they don't enhance the bike's rideability/performance in the real world very much - if at all..

Moved the license plate between pipes. I used a spacer on each side to push pipes apart so plate would fit. Let me tell ya, it's not easy fitting a plate between the pipes on a 02+ VFR800, but I now have it where I want it :)
