Loud pipes and such - Fifth Generation VFR's

So I recently picked up a '99 with 10k on it. It came with a Two Brothers exhaust and a PCII. While the exhaust sounds nice, it is waaaay too loud. I got excited when I saw that there was a silencer available, but according to customer service I'm running an older version which isn't directly compatible and would require a $200 upgrade.

Question is, beside quieter sound, what could I expect from going back to a stock pipe? Does it have any other effect on performance and such? What about the PCII?

Anyone here who's got an aftermarket exhaust that is just too damn quiet and wants to trade?

I have a 2bros on my 5th gen. I really didn't think it was that loud. It's only audible once you get it up in the revs and start hammering it.

How quiet are you looking? Like, stock 6th gen quiet? That wouldn't wake a sleeping bear if you tried.

I can't stand loud pipes anymore personally and they only hurt our sport in general! I found a set of Spuds(inserts) from a member here who sold his bike, but still had the spuds. I bought them and slipped them into my modded aftermarket cans. Dropped a bunch of Db's and I'm happier now as I don't want people or Leo's to hear me coming or going, less attention drawn the better as I'm already speeding. :ph34r:
I wouldn't think your 2bro would need repacking already but you never know.

I bought a 2000 with aftermarket exhaust and a PC II. I swapped out the aftermarket for a stock can. It is quieter and I cannot detect any performance difference. I did not touch the PC. No laptop. I much prefer the stock can. When I get into it it's like ripping canvas. Sweet sound. Hail the engineers that designed this machine.

I just bought my 01 with a TBR exhaust.  I'm not settled on it yet...  It is definitely loud, but I'm kinda liking it right now.  Need to get it out on the open road and see how bad it really is before I think about changing again.

You may want to check the can. Like Baileyrock mentioned, it would seem early for it to need re-packing, but the last owner may have gutted or otherwise altered it to make it louder.

Of course, getting someone to be willing to take an aftermarket exhaust off your hands for the cost of their stock one is one sweet deal, so I'm betting you won't have a real hard time going back to stock if that's what you decide.

Sign me up for the stock/aftermarket swap.  I'm not too picky about the brand . . . just needs to be in good shape.  Believe it or not, my WIFE is making fun of me for having a stock pipe!  So funny.  All her brothers raced motorcycles growing up . . . nothing remained stock.  My bike is an '01 and the exhaust is spotless.

A reputable exhaust fabricator will make you a custom insert (dB killer) for about $30-$40.

I have a D&D pipe that has become much louder than when new. If I take an extended ride over several days, I sometimes swap it out for the stock pipe just to ease my ears. But when I get home, it never fails, I decide the stocker sounds too quiet and I remount the D&D. I've also got some Harley buddies that tease me about my D&D being so quiet. They have no idea that it is aftermarket and that there is an even quieter pipe sitting in my garage. Quiet is all in the ear of the beholder.

I have a high-mount Staintune exhaust on my bike and its loud but tastefully loud. Plus the silencer does a real splendid job when I want the bike to quiet down and still sound nice.

As for the benefits of the aftermarket exhaust over the stock can, weight loss (I'd say maybe a solid 10 lbs) a little horsepower boost depending on the pipe and if its a high-mount...get to really show off that SSSA :fing02:

I bought my 2000 with a Hindle carbon fibre pipe and it was too loud for my tastes.  Sounded great but just a little on the "dig me" side of things so I made my own insert for it with a piece of stainless tubing.  I made it so it has fingers bent out at the ends to hold it in place and cuts that are bent in along the length of it to catch the noise.  Works great and is now the perfect volume for me.

Funny.. when I was buying the bike, the PO said that one of the reasons he's selling is because he's tired of his Harley buddies making fun of him and telling him to get a "real bike". This may be why the thing is louder than what it should be.

I'm definitely going to look into either repacking or having some sort of silencer made. I did notice though that it seems that it's actually not as bad when someone else is riding the bike and I'm near by. Maybe it's a matter of acoustics bouncing around. It's a similar thing with the horn; I get a full blast when using it even though I know it's not that loud.

Things are a bit louder when you're right next to them..

The 2bros carbon pipe on the 5th gen weights 3.9lbs. The stock pipe I had was MUCH heavier. Maybe 15 lbs.

I would definitely check the packing then as the PO may have removed it or modded the can to be more like his straight piped HD buddies!

My '99 has a Two Bros carbon fiber pipe and it's pretty quiet--easily my quietest bike. Other bikes are an F2 with a TWo Bros (loud), 1125r with Barker (very loud), and Daytona 675 with Two Bros (moderately loud). I'd like the Vfr to be louder--maybe trade for your Two Bros pipe?

You would never guess that this is a straight-through D&D shorty, but listen to how quiet it is.  The cam gears are actually louder than the exhaust at idle. Strange how the acustics work in these things.

Back in the day, at my motorcycle accessory store we sold many "NOISE ANNOYS" decals.

Personally, I love loud bikes . . . on the frickiin race track!  Not on the street.

The damage loud bikes do to our public relations is very negative.

Like it or not, we need to keep a quiet profile in order to fit into our society.

Before the VFR I had an FZ6 that with a 2 bros exhaust, they are not usually loud, I would try repacking.
But, if you're set on getting a spud I would just buy a delkevic muffler they come with one and are cheaper than 200.
I have had my 8" mini can from them for 2 years now and it still looks great.

Well, mine's the carbon one too. A trade would eliminate the repacking issue. Which tip does yours have?

I have a very quiet D&D exhaust...while it's asleep at night. :biggrin:

Now granted there is a wall right behind the exhaust, this overpacked super-shorty isnt really all THAT loud, is it? (remember to keep the gear whine as a baseline as far as volume goes) 0%

and the puff of black smoke is a residual from stuffing the sooty packing back in, so no goofy comments if you please.
