Hi from down under , first time doing this so we will see how it goes, forgive my mistakes please. After a week of rain the ride plan that had hatched in a moment of enthusiasm ( stupidity ? ) was here. The starters one 99 vfr800 (immaculate) one BMW 1200GS and my vfr 800 98 mod ( well used with battle scars )
We were heading from Penrith ( sydney ) to Wombeyan Caves coming home via Marulan. The first 90km were on expressway to Mittagong where we refuelled ourselves and the bikes . Coffee was good and we were all looking forward to the real ride , especially the gs rider . After leaving Mittagong the next 30km was tar .From then on except for a small section it would be on dirt roads
The road soon comes down to one lane with a steep drop down one side and rock walls on the other , we all agreed that the scenery was awesome , as it was decided when we left that if you wanted to stop and take pics just do it , we would re group every 5 km ( for once i have some pics)
Some of the road was a bit washed out where the floodways are but nothing to bad
. Lunch was had at wombeyan caves , we took our own not knowing what was there ( a shop and clean toilets )
Leaving the picnic area we headed towrds Taralga , a couple of km of tar then nice smooth dirt
Tar started a couple of km from Taralga and went for a bout 20km till we turned off again ( great tar or maybe just great by comparison )
from there the road got challenging
At Marulan back on the tar for the run home . We all had a great time and are looking forward to the next tar optional run
What mistakes? :smile: Nice post / photos. Some of those sections of road look pretty gnarly. I'm a wimp when it comes to gravel, etc. I keep the girl on clean pavement if at all possible. :tour:
Good for you, looks like one hell of an adventure. I'm a dirt and gravel sissy myself. Never had any real problems, just grit my teeth and try to stay relaxed while I go through it, but I definately still prefer paved road.
Cool pics. Being a former Motocross Racer I always get a bit of a smile when Detoured off the main road (accident, construction) through the country dirt roads. Then again, I've also been known to get both VFR tires off the ground as well. Either way those pics look awesome and it must have been a really fun ride.
In another life I used to ride mountainbikes there - fun screaming down the road from the tunnel to the river (with more than a few seriously frightening moments) then along either side of the river. And we'd take our dirtbikes down to Limeburners for weekends of mayhem... thanks for the pics!
Yes its true, this posts original author often complains that his hemorrhoid's are playing up. To that I say, don't relax just yet Oldboyrace......
So far our trusty VFR's have traveled the road (trail in parts) from Cooma to Canberra via the National park.. (Stuff the highways on a long weekends we both said.)
Next came the above little Saturday lunch date to Wombeyan Caves.
But don't rest yet as those were the warm ups. I intend dropping a few more on the table for us and that bloody 1200GS that eats any road or trail.
Greens rd, Lower Portland to St Albans, NSW, (to visit the pub for lunch) We will be traveling on the west side of the Hawkesbury River, a hard one in more than a few parts.
Not forgetting the Colo river to Bilpin via the Mountain Lagoon rd. In parts my source says it becomes a fire trail.
These VFR800's truly are amazing little bikes. So far they have answered yes sir to anything we have asked of them.
The Oldboyrace dude rides the red VFR and he does it rain, hail or shine between home and work, often in Sydney peak hour traffic.
It has over100,000km on it and yet sounds as sweet as my one, the silver and red VFR that has just 30,000km on it.
