What the hell is this thing on Nickys bike? - Motorcycle Racing Talk

I am talking about the big ass hook on the right side bar end? I suppose its a brake protector to keep from having his brakes tangle with another rider?

They are mandatory now in motoGP.

Stacey Moaner hates them. Ask any rider who has had their brake lever mashed in a starting line or turn one scrum and see what they say!

It is a Ducati so it could very well be a tow hook. :wink:

They should protect the brake lever from accidental engagement as others have stated, but they also have a weak point designed into them so they will break in the event of a crash. You wouldn't want your hand getting caught in that thing during a wreck!

That thing on Nicky's bike is designed to keep Cal Crutchlow behind him.

Yep. And ask Sete Gibernau. (Barcelona 2006 I think) His teammate, Caparosi nailed his brake lever. That crash probably started the ball rolling for this new rule.

Another great example of why these are being implemented, check out or review the 2011 AMA Daytona Sportbike Daytona 200 race...Josh Herrin was suspended for his "flailing elbow into Westby's brake lever" move that sent two guys sliding down the banking into turn one at 100+

Seems like a good idea. Dirt bikes have them.
