This morning I was checking Facebook to check in with friends and family and I noticed a post from my older sister (She'll be 48 this September, but you didn't hear that from me). Anyway here's what she posted "Well I did it...I registered for my riding lessons :) This will be a new adventurous chapter in my life!"
To me there are very few things that "riding lessons" could refer to, so I started reading some of her friends responses to her post and low and behold, she will be taking motorcycle riding lessons! Of course my curiosity was piqued so I had to ask, "What bike are you taking these lessons with?", thinking that she had bought a bike and said nothing about it. Her response was that the place she's taking lessons at supplies the bike.
So here is where the battle of the siblings starts, our younger sister (in her early 40's) starts chiming in..."No you're not, you take horseback riding lessons, NOT motorcycle riding lessons!"
My retort..."Horses are no less dangerous than motorcycles". Personally I think they are more dangerous, no one ever startled my bike causing me to be thrown off of it.
So the younger sister goes on about knowing too many people who lost limbs, loved ones, etc. (sound familiar?) and that it's not the rider she's worried about but other drivers on the road. She's not worried about me because I have a lot of experience...yadda, yadda, yadda (There's logic in there somewhere right?)
So my dad chimes in with, "Nothing we can do but wish her luck and try to keep her out of "The Valley" and LA. (To non So. Californians, "The Valley" refers to the San Fernando Valley, a suburb of Los Angeles. Ever hear the Frank Zappa song 'Valley Girl', see the movie that it spawned? Well that would be the place.)
As a side note, my dad and I have been riding for some time and actually shared a few bikes together, so he knows what it is to be on a bike. He, not too recently, lost his sight in one eye reducing his depth of field and thus had to give up riding (Moms orders). I on the other hand have continued riding gaining another bike in the process, my VFR!
Sorry, I digress. This set my younger sister off, "NO dad, she's still your daughter forbid her to do that!". I'm really enjoying this, for two reasons, one my older sister has "crossed over" and wants to join the MC ranks. Yeah! and the other is that my younger sister has forgotten all of the crap she got away with when she was younger! So watching her freak out is not only giving me a laugh but it's also ironic. What can I say, we like to put the "fun" in disfunctional family!
I can only imagine the phone calls my younger sister is making to my parents "offline" from Facebook. I spoke to my mother shortly after reading that and she's fine with it too. Her response was similar to my dads, "It's her life I can't tell her what to do she's a grown up".
Well, wish my older sister luck, ride safe and have fun.
