Using 2 stroke fuel to top up - Fifth Generation VFR's

I was told using fuel mixed 20:1 with 2 stroke oil can be used to top up my tank without causing harm. Is this true? I have used it for two weeks now and besides my bike smelling like a 2 stroke it has made no difference! Will it be harmful in the long run?

I would imagine that over time the injectors would develop some build-up.  (Not too many injected 2 strokes around).  Also, it may be harmful to your catostrophic converter.

With the longevity of Honda engines already established with regular use, the slight benifit to the valves would be overshadowed by the possibility of some bad side effects.

I used to put a dollop of Castrol R in my 72 Bonneville's gas tank, but that bike has WAY lower tolerances.

I was once told by someone who drag races 30+ yr old bikes that merely a cap full of 2 stroke oil into every tank of petrol will keep the insides clean of rust without causing any harm to power or longevity.
Especially useful when using a 2nd hand tank with an unknown history.

I'd be careful about the Fi system though as timmy suggests.. its usually only done with carbies which are a lot less fragile to foreign objects/fluids than injectors

There is a HUGE amount of info on the two stroke oil (TC3w ONLY) as an additive  to gas over on the ls1 site, Bob the oil Guy, etc. Reader's digest version is 1 ounce to 5 gallons of fuel (especially the 10% ethanol blends) CAN make a big difference in drivability. The two best are the Wal Mart Super Tech TC3w and if you want to put only the best synthetic in Amzoil's HP Injector 2 stroke oil (they have several different kinds, this is the stuff you want for 4 cycle use). I have been using the Wal Mart stuff in my cars and the Amzoil stuff in my 4th gen and am VERY pleased. I think the origin of the research are the tech geeks on the LS1site, so start there for more info.

1:20 ratio sounds like way too much oil.

A little mixed gas poured in with your regular gas is not a problem.

I've dumped some into my truck just to use it up at the end of the summer (weedwhacker gas).

Small quantities are not a problem.

I do the same thing. Strangely though, I use two stroke mixed gas in my push mower as well for the past 4 years. Mower starts on first pull every time and i have never changed the plugs or cleaned the carb. At the end of fall when I don't need any more fuel I top off the snow blower and put the rest in one of my cars.

I think he was refering to the OP's 20:1 mix.  I assume that the pre-mix is being added to regular gas, so the mix is not truly 20:1.
I don't know much about FI bikes, but I'm not seeing much of an upside to using two stroke oil.  If may not be bad, but that doesn't mean it's good.  What benefit are we looking for?

That's why I use MMO(Marvel Mystery Oil) in mine, helps to lube the upper end of the engine.

Thanks for all the info guys! I think i'll use it very sparingly just to top up. The fuel i get is free excess from the karting guys at our local race track. They usually dump the fuel left over at the end of the day but it's such a waste! I have gone 2 weeks now without any problems but i will keep an eye on my bike's performance.

When hi-test gas was  18 cents a gallon and dino oil was 5 cents a qt. it was called "upper-lube" every service station carried it. Oil that you poured in your car gas tank. It did stop valve train chatter- engines were rebuilt by 100k miles back then.YIKES It is not going to hurt,but what will it help?

I must have missed something.....   for the past 25+ years I rode up the the pump, put in regular fuel, never felt my top end was suffering in any way.

I use mmo in my gas. But it dont think it helps in a well maintained engine. i use it bacuse my bike can sit long periods of time between rides.

im not sure about using 2 stroke oil in the gas though.

one last note, your 99 doesnt have a cat to wreck. The mix oil isnt likely to cause trouble but you will probably get some of that oil building up in the exhaust side of things over time. But i'm guessing we are talking about a gallon here, a half gallon there and still mixed with regular un-cut fuel so yeah, totally fine.

Free is good as long as it works without a problem for the bike. I'm surprised they don't pour it into their own trucks rather than dump it, as much as it costs.
I'll admit I don't know what gas prices are like in South Africa.

Carbon would be the side effect, ever seen a two stoke exhaust alot of carbon, Normally the exhaust Port valves have to be cleaned periodically from Oil carbon, So Id expect your valve stems to be subjected to additional carbon build up also.

The only thing thats known to lubricate the top end, plus sand blast (clean) all carbon is Leaded race fuel. Reguar Gas will carbon, but they add detergents to reduce carbon build up. So adding an oily substance, at the very least is going to increase carbon buildup, and that includesMMO.

Like Monk says, use Marvel Mystery Oil in both the gas and oil.
If my bike sits for too long then I add some Sea Foam Fuel Treatment.

Just wondering....... If a motor is an electric power unit, and a engine is a combustible power unit,,,,,, Why do they call them Motorcycles?

I dont think 2-stroke oil, in small amount and quality one will do harm, unless you have a modell whit a catalytic conventer, like my 2000 has. Usually it just lubes stuff and modern 2-stroke oil dont do carbon buildup like old oils did. If you use to mutch your mates will say you need a engine rebuild thro, as it sterts to some some, like a worn engine....

I use 2-stroke oiled fule regulary in my Brigs&Stratton gras cutter, as I only have one canister for that and my 2-stroke chain saw....

That's why, according to the oilgeeks, using the TC-3w spec two stroke oil is so important. It burns super clean (ashless) so there is no worry about injectors or cats.

tc3w is bio degradable, to not polute the water ways, there's nothing about it better for your motor

Why not just use the Marvels Mystery Oil...

That stuff is great! And safe.

Three weeks now with 2 stroke fuel and i have noticed a builup of oil on the plugs. I took them out this morning to check. I don't think i'll use it anymore even though i get it for free! I just didn't like the oily buildup on the plugs. I suspect it will affect my bike's performance over time.
