1984 VF500 rear shock frozen won't move in or out

I have a 1984 VF500F. I have been working on the bike forever and I went to install the rear mono shock after disassembly for frame paint and it seems frozen. I added air to the valve and than released the pressure and it sprayed yellowish fluid? It seems my seal is bad or did I leave the rear shock on its side too long? thanks

those stock shocks are crap... they can sorta be rebuilt, but really not worth it.. check w/ Jamie Daugherty on board... he's got a few solutions for that.

I have a good stock shock from an '86, yours for the cost of shipping if you want it.

Not to downplay the very generous offers above, if I could add though, the stock VF500F shock wasn't the best even when new. A shock conversion is well worth the minimal investment.

I was thinking of purchasing a used CBR 1990's rear shock and adding a bracket to make it the same height?

That will be much better than the stocker.

I wonder about information on the CBR F2 shock conversion? Can I fabricate a bracket to make it the same physical length?

If you don't have access to a machine shop Jamie Daugherty can modify your supplied CBR shock.

A DMr F4i shock conversion is also and option:

Invisiblecites- Nice pictures. I purchase a F2 CBR600 rear shock. The F2 is from 1991-1993 I think and it does not have the remote

reservoir. I added spacers to the top and added prototype brackets to the bottom. The shock is mounted and seems good. I still have the bike on a lift and it will be another month or so before I can ride it to determine if it feels o.k. It seems better. I like your pictures of the lower brackets. THANK YOU

Good deal. Glad this was of help. I think 352mm or thereabouts is about as far as you can go on the shock length.

Jamie D would be the one to check with on this.

Just in case anyone is interested, here's my -not yet tested- shock modification based on a HAGON CBR600, I think it is a F1.

I went to the stock length of 346mm, bolt center to bolt center.

I am not sure if this specific shock (CBR600F1) has the right stroke but it was a bargain and I thought I it would be worth giving it a try.
