VERY odd odometer issue

When I turn the ignition on, the odometer displays 188888 or something similar, then goes completely blank after the bike finishes 'starting up'. Running or not running makes no difference with it. Trip meter works, speedometer works, tachometer works. Back of the dash has no burnt connectors or wiring. What should I look at next?

Oooo. Making kind of a guess here without a schematic, but it sounds like the prom (memory chip that holds the permanent odo count) has died. I was originally thinking display driver, but then again the trip meters and such work - which I'm betting are stored seperately from the odo count. Good electronics tech might be able to pick it apart (since I don't think Honda provides a dash schmatic for us), but I'm giuessing a replacement dash is going to be the way to go. Only real downside here will be you won't be able to sell it as orginal miles.

Have the exact same problem here, i have a service sheet from this spring that states the bike was at ~45 000 Km and i bought the bike in late summer, the odometer goes 188888 then goes blank, please send me a private message if you have found a fix for it (I'm interested in another fix beside replacing the whole LCD panel) i agree with DaveM about the prom being dead (i also suspect the owner might have tried tampering with the chip) I've done about a 1500 km with the bike so far i just want it to show near it's real mil

I think he might mean "clear codes". Not sure that's going to change anything with the ODO however.

This probably isn't related to the issue at hand, but just an FYI. The vfr only has a 5 digit odometer that shows during normal operation. When you first turn the key on , is the only time you can actually see the real mileage, it disappears back to the latest 100,000 mile 5 digit number afterwards.
