I have 2004, and am interesting best bang for the buck performance improvement for a few to several hundred dollars. I have read several threads about Power Commanders, but I still not clear if I need one if I have stock exhaust. I like the look of the stock exhaust, don't mind the sound, and don't see spending the $600+ for exhaust looks and sound (ok, the wife won't approve it...gotta pick you battles). So, will a PC get me any noticable or significant improvement in performance with stock exhaust to justify the price of the PC? They're not cheap. If so, will the PC V work on the 2004?
One thing I have noticed is the jerkiness of the acceloration, when cracking the throttle. Probably lots of user error here, but wondering if a PC helps to reduce the jerkiness.
I have one track day under my belt, and had a blast. Planning on doing a few to several track days a year now.

A PC will help squeeze out a few HPs, but it should also smooth out the rev range. Doesn't matter what exhaust you're running.

This is exactly why I put one on my 5th gen, it really smoothed out the off idle throttle response. I used one of their canned maps instead of a dyno tune and it served my purpose. Just don't expect any other real performance improvement on a stock bike.
No...you don't need it. But it as the others have said it will smooth out the rough spots and if in the future you get an aftermarket exhaust you can simply retune the map and you are good to go.
Slight jerkiness during acc would be due to out of sync starter valves. Get that sorted out before you get a PC. Not sure it will add any additional HP, but remove any flat spots and make it smoother.

I can pick up a PCIII for $240 or or PCV for $282 on ebay. I'm thinking I will set it and forget it, so do I need will the additional features on PCV really matter for me, or save $40 and go with the PCIII?
I lost most of the jerkiness, when disconnecting the Pair valve connector, de-acitvating the flapper valve and loosing the snorkel as per

some agree and some disagree with these mods, I've had no problems. I did remove the connector after the other two, and this took away a clicking sound on/off throttle.
....... Then added a set of Leo's (took a while, but then finally had the missus approval) and then o2 eliminators. Smooth as now, very happy.

Search this on eBay: "VFR800 Power Commander 111-411", sort by dollar amount, and you should see it. There's only one. I'm going with the PCV. Good luck.
