I have an onboard voltmeter which was over the course of months getting lower and lower. It started of at 13.7V at 5k rpm which was low but within range. I then noticed it dwindle down to 13.2V at the same rpm range when cold. It wouldn't stay there, but 13.2 was a sign of something not good. Thoughts of replacing the stator, a possible bad R/R, a fried connector danced through my head.
First things first. I know the OEM wiring is (I'll be generous) suspect. After a few emails with Tightwad, I order a VFRness. Shipping was lightning fast, and I received it within 5 business days. It looks like he's in NJ, I'm in CA. Upon opening the box, it looks the business and the directions were self explanitory. Removing the appropriate body pieces took longer than the actual change.
The upshot: starting her back up reveled an increase of about 1V at idle and at 5k. Just to be on the safe side, I confered with the manual to verify that is wasn't too high. This was simply because I haven't seen 14.9V before on my bike, and I've had it for about 10k miles.
On TW's suggestion, I do still have to replace the starter connection. Mine does look to be a little crispy. It doesn't NEED replacement, but I figure better to do it now before it gives me problems. I don't have access to a soldering iron until this weekend.
Overall, this was a very worthwhile purchase. Nothing like making the old girl even more bulletproofer.
